Hi
I am looking for some advice for a friend. She has a shetland that has come down with stress related laminitis after loosing her companion donkey at New Year. She has been advised to keep Abbey in the yard and put a surface of sand down, but it keeps freezing.
Has anyone any tricks for stopping the freezing or used any alternatives? It may be that the weather will help anyway, but I thought I would ask.

I've been looking at hoof boots and most of them seem to say they are good in your friends situation. I think shires do some which are quite cheap but not the long lasting regular riding ones, could be wrong (i've looked at so many) but I think they were about £18 each. |

I think it is a temporary measure. She has had the vet out. Will ask about frog supports. I also know of some great foam pads from the US but not sure how long they would take to arrive.

Do you mean keep permantely in a yard or temporary till they can get the Lamintis under control?
If temporary I would advise they get the vet out and have frog supports fitted or at least get it in a stable and bed down with shavings.
If long term then the sand obviously wont freeze at night shortly, it is going to become a lot milder at nights soon, fingers crossed!!
but short term if the pony has Lamintis now I would advice stabling it because walking around will make the situation much much worse in the long term.
