There I was all ready to take Merlyn on Sunday to the showing clinic and when I got home from work last night, he's lame. Not just a little bit............oh no..............he's crippled!!!
At first I blamed Kalidah for kicking him (she is being a bit of a cow at the moment), but when I checked him over, there is no heat or swelling in any of his legs. So I suspect it's an abcess, especially when it's come on so suddenly. He's had an abcess in that near fore before and it could well be that it didn't drain properly or something.
Anyway the upshot is that Merlyn won't be going anywhere tomorrow. I could cry. This happened last year too, when I entered him for the Royal Highland Show. Only then, he developed a massive splint!! Horses, who'd have them?!
Oh and just to add insult to injury Maverick aimed a kick at me this morning (I was rubbing under his tummy) and unfortunately connected, so I now have a swollen hand and a small cut!!!

Just had the vet in and it's not great news on either horse! Merlyn has done some damage to his fetlock and has to have 4 weeks box rest. It's as though he has either slipped or gone over on his ankle type thing (probably when running about with the others) and he needs to stay still to help it heal.........great I can see him eating his way out of my stable!
Kalidah has Degenerative Joint Disease. The vet poked and proded at her knee and we trotted her up and down several times. The upshot is that she has cartilge damage to that knee and the vet felt that she could be fine for several weeks and would then go lame again (which is what she has been doing). The snag there is that I can't then get her fit enough to do the things I'd like to do with her. The vet said that I can take her in to the surgery to have her xray if I like, to see what the full extent of the damage is, but that the prognosis isn't good. She said that in the meantime I could give her a small amount of bute to keep her sound so that I can ride, but I'm not comfortable doing that and I don't think it's fair on Kalidah. 
Great........think I'll take up selling lucky white heather!! The only horse I have that is sound is Maverick and he's too young to ride!!! I think I might just give up on horses.

I've got the vet coming out to Merlyn now as he isn't improving on Danalon and is a bit depressed. Between him and my mare being lame........yet again....I could really see horses far enough!
I've had problems with periodic lameness with my mare since I got her in December 2008. She is only on loan to me, but it's all very complicated a situation, as her owner is seriously ill and couldn't care for her any longer. The mare was returned to my friend who bred her and she in turn offered the mare to me. She has far too many horses as it is, but wouldn't see the mare passed on as she had bred her. It was a lovely gesture, and I love this mare dearly, but really not sure what to do for the best. The owner hasn't responded to any letters or emails since September last year and my friend now wonders if she has taken a turn for the worst.
I'll pass on the outcome from the vets once he's been on Thursday. |

Horses are behaving for once. OH isn't and has dumped me.

Grrr! Wouldn't it just be lovely to have one of those 2 year old tantrums, scream, sob, beat your fists, you'd feel so much better! Sadly, we have to be content with doing it all inside our heads, it's just not as rewarding!

It’s called the Law of Sod! Console yourself with the thought that without bad days you can’t appreciate the good ones.
My plans to ride were scuppered yesterday by finding 2000 sheep in the yard for sorting. No chance of getting horses through the gates without escapees, so I had to give up & join in the shepherding. By the time we finished it was dark. Today I have orange stains all over my hands :-/

Ha ha, I know the feeling. Always happens! We're having similar things happening on our yard. The hunt is coming next week and loads of people were joining, we've then had incident after incident... Horse pts due to twisted guts, horse kicked and stapled, horse stuck in barbed wire and falling over, horse with warm hoof, people falling off, etc.
Would swap with another asbo case but can't ride at the moment. Started off with bruises on backside due to falling off, I then proceeded to chop the tip off my long finger on Sat while making a salad, just waiting for my third accident now

It's always the way Hope he's OK soon, if it's just an abscess it should clear up quickly (I hope - I've got one with an abscess too!). |
