Posted - 03 Mar 2010 : 1:21:47 PM As we all know, arabians can be accident prone. As I have now added a youngster to my herd I am reviewing my fencing as I need to sub-divide and reorganse. There are new products on the market, ranging from Tornado type horse fence that has small holes (so feet can't get stuck) to new flexible fencing with an electric hot wire, horses bounce off it. Posts wooden, or plastic. Conventional electric tape, or wire. Post and rail etc.
If you were starting from scratch what would you prefer as a safe means of containing our friends. I will have to use some electric hot wire as we have cattle. Sheep will go through gaps. Alpacas don't get on well with just electric fence tapes as their fleece insulates them and they can get tangled and die!!! The American miniatures can limbo dance under most things. The pigs.... well they have to have their own well designed pens as they can bulldoze there way through anything.
All ideas gratefully received - experiences good or bad. Obviously no barbed wire or even plain wire if it could cause injury when run through. One of my older arab mares gave me a scare recently when turned out with another mare of the same age. One was galloping after the other and the one in the lead "forgot" the fence was there and ran into it (trying a half jump at the last minute) and did a somersault over it. She landed fine fortunately and only had a graze on one leg and a bruised pride!! I dread anything happening to any of them.

Posted - 04 Mar 2010 : 2:45:06 PM Like delly-b i find wooden posts with electric tape works perfectly well, plastic poly posts are okay for temperary use but they are not stable enough in the ground when we get wet and windy weather. Wire is okay but i feel not visible enough on its own. I have both electric fencing and wooden fencing and never have any problems with escapees

Posted - 04 Mar 2010 : 1:51:46 PM I have 1.8m x 60mm round wooden posts that easily bang into the ground, then have 3 strands of 6mm electric rope in between. I have used this for a few years and have not had any problems as yet with it. My new foal was introduced to it and wont go near it at all. It even keeps daddy away from him and mummy (yes daddy prefered to take the risk to jump a gate instead, but wouldnt touch the fencing.... but thats another story )
I have used plastic posts but dont use for the horses anymore.... I just dont find them safe enough.

Posted - 04 Mar 2010 : 1:21:39 PM I had a stallion who would pull the plastic post out of the ground so the fence dropped and then jump over it.

Posted - 04 Mar 2010 : 1:05:03 PM Have divided big home paddock in two with electric fencing...but dippy stallion decided that having zapped himself on the nose, on the main paddock gate, he was going to continue being a twit. He charged off, bucked, then reared and got his legs through the electric fencing, being zapped again at the same time, broke the fence and thought that now would be a good time to strut his stuff up and down the disaster, snorting!
The gateway dividing the 2 sections has wooden posts, but the rest is plastic posts with both rope and tape and seems to be working very well. The horses soon get used to the zap and keep clear, except for the dippy boy, who you would have thought would have known better by now!!

Posted - 03 Mar 2010 : 7:56:03 PM Hi
We have post and rail with electric on the rails.Great until someone gets brave enough to pull it then it doesn't work!
So we have just had some new fences put in. Post and rail but the motorway type. Then on one side the horse net. Great because it comes just over the top rail so they cant chew it,the dog cant get through it,the rabbits don't go near it,the horses cant stick there heads under the top rail and knock them off,the muntjac haven't jumped it yet and the bloody pigeons cant sit on it.
Love it, just another 18 acres to go. LOL

Posted - 03 Mar 2010 : 2:59:22 PM I am wondering this at the moment! I now have wooden posts with 2 strands of electric tape between but am considering top and bottom wooden rails with a strand of electric rope in the middle - safe containment and the electric rope gives a better shock than the tape so stop them leaning on it or pushing through. Very interested so see the other replies!
