I have just started to slowly bring honey back into work after being lame for 6 months. She came back off loan crippling lame. she was extremely sore in her shouder, neck, poll, with a dropped and rotated pelvis locked, knees and pedal bone rotation in her off fore. I finally with help of phsio, chrio, and farrier work now have her sound enough to be ridden. I am now slowly starting to bring her back into work which she is enjoying and have put her onto blue chip Dynamic And buteless just to help her and keep her sound. She is 11yr and thought the blue chip would help her joints and was wondering if any one has used the blue chip or should i give her a supplement instead, or with it. She is only fed with this half a scoop of dengie healthy hoof and a general vitamin supplement and a little linseed oil. I just want to do my best for her to get her back into work and would like to get her doing a little sj, xc only small courses and dressage again or am i being hopeful lol
O i even have some one comming out at the end of the month to talk to her. A friend had a lady to see her big awkward horse and was amazed at what the lady was able to tell her and all she had been told was his name. She was even able to tell them about the horses companion pony who was very ill through the night and had to be put to sleep post mortem showed a brain tumour, and the horse had told her how many times the vet had been out that night. I thought it might shed some light on what possibly happened to her

So sorry to hear about her second bout....It's a terrible disease.

For any info on Lami, supplements, feed etc there is a yahoo group called Metabolic Horse. The owner of it is called Jackie Taylor and she is a complete Guru on Lami/IR/Cushings etc etc.

I would recommend that you join and speak to her, she knows sooooo much.

Good luck and hope Honey starts to feel better very soon.

So sorry to hear that, poor Honey! Fingers crossed she makes a speedy recovery and is back out enjoying herself again x

Thanks all well honey has took a relapse and has taken another dose of laminitis. Not sure what has caused it but she was comming on so well and was the best i have seen her running around the paddock since she came back. Hopefully we have caught it early enough and they is no more damage done, and she never got really bad, was rocking and shifting weight and refusing to walk and when she did het feet out in front but only for one day and responded well to the pain medication. She is still on box rest and we haven't tried to walk her yet but she is happy to walk round her big bed. We have took her off everything and managed to get some cool fibre for her with hay so fingers crossed it is only a little set back. We still aren't sure what was the trigger as it could have been a Number of things contributing but we wont be taking any more chances and looks like she will be retired from riding and see how she goes.

Hi,
My mare has an old injury which makes her a bit stiff behind when she hasn't been worked in a while (most people don't notice, but I know it's there). I've started her on glucosamine and estherC and the difference is already noticeable, she's so much more flamboyant in the field, people think she's having comp mix or something! Also, I've started taking the human versions as I have hypermobility disorder and I feel the difference (no more aching joints!) so I would thoroughly recommend to both achey riders and horses!!
Freya

P.S. Glucosamine is Gold Label brand, estherC is human product, consulted with vet on dosage.

Just do a search on ebay for magnesium oxide and you'll find lots of suppliers

As a joint supplement but one that is made from rosehips - so a double bonus - I would have a look at Litovet. It's new on the market for horses and I spent ages talking to the reps at BETA. I was very impressed with their scientific evidence... according to independent studies it's up to 60% more effective than glucosomine. Plus with the anti inflammatory properties of rosehips it should be beneficial for laminitics too.

From what you've said so far can I assume she's fully over her Lami, in recovery, just starting work so naturally lacking muscle tone and a little bit stiff due to an old injury?

I think what you've got her on is fine to be honest if she's in good condition - the muscle and top-line will come with correct work.

There are loads of supplements for Laminitis prone horses that you can feed as others have mentioned. Personally I use Formula 4 Feet as that is an all round vit & min supplement as well, so I just have to feed 1 thing in addition to their feed... I have tried Magnesium powder and other herbal stuff as recommended to me, but it didn't work for us as my boy wouldn't eat it!

It's a shame the cool fibre isn't available anymore as it looks like a good feed for Lamis. I use Spillers Happy Hoof and have used Dodsen & Horrell Safe & Sound in the past, but again, my boy wouldn't eat it as it didn't taste of much! It depends how sensitive your horse is to sugar I suppose - both mine are fine on these and I am looking at the Allen & Page Slim & Healthy or Saracen Re-Leve for Shesk as now he is fit and in proper work, needs some more energy and help! Would be great if anyone has experiences of these?

With the stiffness, you have to expect a bit after having time off - like us going to the gym when we haven't been for a while, for muscles to develop they have to stretch and tear a little, so it is normal for them to feel it. Similarly it will take a while for her to get her balance back, so I wouldn't worry too much about that to be honest!

However, as she has an old injury I think giving her a joint supplement is a good idea, so the Blue Chip Dynamic should be helping her! I haven't any experience with this, but if you don't think it's working, try something else? I think you will have to start a new post though for suggestions lol! It really is trial and error! I use Equistro Flexadin for Pasha which really helps him, but he is 22 has arthritis and needs something quite heavy duty! Shesk wasn't on anything but I had some Maxavita Magaflex (after a failed trial on Pasha)... IMO it does nothing! The best reports I have had for normal 'off the shelf' products is Suppleaze Gold, so I will get a tub and try it on Shesk, worth a go although he doesn't really need anything.

Magnetic therapy is very beneficial IMO and I have really started to come around to the whole idea! I have the lot - boots, massage pads and a rug on it's way (not even used yet). To be fair though, I haven't used my massage pad on Shesk for a few days and I haven't noticed a difference me thinks it is the work that is doing the trick - he has been in proper work 8 weeks now and I think that is making the most difference xxx

Thanks all I find she is a bit short and still feel on the odd corner she would raise her head and be awkward but if i get her to drop her head and balance round it she can ride the corners very well. I would likle to get her back doing riding club and maybe a little sj and xc not doing any thing big, like she was doing last year. She has enough condition on her but is lacking a little muscle tone and topline which i hope will improve. She has also always been stiff on a hind leg from an injury as a yearling and has always rode short on it but loosens with work and she can track up. I just thought if i could give her something to help her i would get it for her. I will did have her on the cool fibre from spillers when i brought her into work 2 years ago and it had magnesium added, but unfortunately i can't get it any more tried the local feed places and said they just cant get it as it doesn't sell

I can also recommend the Global herbs Laminitis supplement, I know a few people who have used this after the horse has had Laminitis and it has never returned.I second what Loosefur says about don't feed anything with mollasses, the vet also told me not to feed too many carrots and apples, and to soak the hay for as long as possible.
loosefur Posted - 03 Mar 2010 : 12:50:13 PM
Trying adding a magnesium supplement - pure magnesium oxide which you can buy cheaply from ebay is better than the branded magnesium supplements. Magnesium helps to break down the sugars which cause lami. Rosehips are an anti inflammatory so can help reduce foot pain, so can really help. Avoid feeds with molasses in - that includes Healthy Hoof and most of the other similar feeds like Safe and Sound and Happy Hoof - swap to non-molassed chop or something like Fast Fibre. Provided you can remove the cause of lami then a full recovery is totally possible.

Yes, I forgot to say Moatside my farrier noted that her hoof was in a better shape and the horn growth was a lot better.

The only problem I had when it came to spring I upped her level of the supplement to the maximum dose and she went a little bit silly!! lol but that never bothered me, just went to prove that it was doing something.

I found that, like Rafa, the GH Lamiprone played a part in my mare's recovery - farrier and vet were impressed with the change in her. The Rebuilder is good for a "push start" as well.
Kazzy Posted - 03 Mar 2010 : 11:03:47 AM
I used to use Laminitis prone supplement from Global Herbs on my C hronic Laminetic mare it was pure Indian herbs.

It wasnt a cure but I think it helped her out a lot and the vet did also even though he didnt beleive in herbal supplements he said there was a definate change in the way she walked and her well being.

She was suppose to be on a sachet of bute for the rest of her life but I put her on this and I didnt need the bute!!

Unfortunately she got Cushings and even when she was on pergolide she didnt manage to beat it after a number of years.

Hi Helen,

What are her problems (if any) now i.e. what are you hoping to help her with? Is she stiff/sore, lacking in muscle, condition or are her feet in need of help?

There are soo many different products out there that claim to do wonderful things, but one thing I have learned is that if it aint broke, don't fix it!

So if she's sound, happy and well on what she is currently on, don't change! If not, we can help
