I have got my mare and her 20 yr old gelding mini companion, I am thinking of adding 1 more to the family maybe a young male, but am concerned about 3 being a crowd.... Has anybody been in this situation and is 3 a crowd?? |

Baz has two mares  and if they go riding he is next to a field of two geldings one mare so he can always see and play over the fence with another herd

Or instead of getting a fourth, you take number three out on a lead rein.... |

3 is good - 4 is better!!! If you take two out at a time, one is left home alone. So you need number 4 to keep number 3 happy. |

I had this when i introduced the new boy, yearling at time to the two mares,was i have to say a stressfull several months if am honest..
Now nearly two yrs on she has finaly excepted him..
Have to say my mare who did the bullying had always been the one bullied previously, also i have to say she was super aggresive and it suprised some very experienced people how aggresive she was towards him..
With working with them and around them now they get on wonderfully.. |

i have three but certainly not a herd lol two dominant mares and a cheeky 2yr. I havent tried the two mares together which happen to be mother and daughter as even with a paddock fence between them they are threatening and kicking at each other and worried as i know honey the mum would kick if a horse was to as much as threaten and last year her daughter xsara had a fall out with the pony mare i had who had spent the whole winter turned out together. I tried to put them out and had to admit defeat and turn them out into the seperate paddocks and even at that were kicking planks out between them, but xsara and kelly started a fight and kelly wouldn't run and xsara never stopped kicking and put her to the ground and was still kicking and kicked fences rails out, if we hadn't been there to separate them not sure what would have happened as non were giving up kelly would have ended up throw the fence for sure. Luckily enough she had three rugs on so ended up with no marks. |

Merlin used 2 live on his own, then Gerry joined, then Pudsey (who was a foal) now they live with a donkey!
I think horses love bigger numbers they feel safer with more around. |

I have three and no problems at all. They are all happy to be left alone or for one to be taken out as they know they always come back eventually. |

For reasons mentioned already, three CAN be a good number. However, I have a word of caution - please be careful when introducing a horse to an already established pair; the dominant one of the pair can resent an interloper and be quite aggressive!

The only thing I was always taught is that there should be more mares than geldings if you mix the sexes but no idea if that's true or not as always been at yards that separate. |

I am another who thinks 3 is an ideal number as you never have one on its own when you ride or whatever  |

I dont think you will have any problems at all. I have never found three to be a crowd

I find 3 excellent, for the same reason as Vicki says. I have 16 most of which turnout in three's |

three is good because if you decide to ride one or for some reason take a horse to do something with, then at least there will be 2 keeping each other company

Have grown my herd from 1 to 4 in the past year, no problems, going to be 5 tomorrow, I'm so excited! That's it then, really! |

I added a 2 year old gelding to be a companion for my companion (!!) and have to agree its a little herd. |

We often have 3 and they never seem over bothered, only issue would be if 2 were incredibly close; we had 2 throughbreds once which were bestest of friends so we stayed at 4 til one of the throughbreds left.
