I was just having a quick coffee break and flicking through a well known auction site when I came across someone selling hair extensions for horses - made from real horse hair. The design of them look exactly like the ones people use and they are fastened in the same way (with little clips). They also sell kits where you can glue the hair in yourself (on the horse!) although I think this might eventually defeat the object of trying to grow long manes as the hair would be damaged or broken when you tried to remove them however careful you are. This got me thinking...how would this stand in the world of showing, particularly arabs/palominos? If there is someone on here with a good knowledge of the rules for pallys or arabs it would be helpful to know. Real horse hair is a natural product so any advice would be really helpful. Looking forward to any replies as this I found this quite interesting.

I met a girl who is a hairdresser and puts proper hair extensions on horses manes and tails. Glued in like you would on people.

Did you get any notes from the judges - it would have made me smile!

A dressage horse I used to do shiatsu on had a very weedy tail and he had a tail extension. It looked quite good and I don't think fell out. Maybe there is a knack to putting them in. I wouldn't ever do it as I can guarantee any time I have tried anything false - eg eye-lashes, I always get caught out.

Oscar our new dressage horse has had his tail chewed off by a donkey!

When we went to try him he had a false tail in and we didnt really notice untill they came clean.

Last week he did his first comp, so i put the false tail in(he came with it!)

Tied it up with its tabs and then for good measure stitiched it as well.

Brill i thought, what a good job.

That was till Amy took him down the centre line and just before x it fell out!

We wont be putting it in again and to be honest it just looks like a very short tail. Plus it didnt stop him winning.

So you might see it for sale on ebay!!

Mind you, I have to say I think people are starting to pull their Arabs' manes now to show off the neck better and probably have been for a while!

Don't ask me, I don't make the rules, just enforce 'em!

Personally, I think a half-hogged horse just looks silly - and as you probably know through your Spanish contacts, the one thing Spanish mare owners are told NOT to do is half-hog as it makes the neck look SHORTER! This is a very basic design principle (dividing something into two parts if you want to visually reduce the length/height) , so why Arab owners think it makes the neck look *longer* I don't know either!

Of course Alistair; people have been using them for about 15 years (hair extensions that it, not tails!!).

Singing star, X-Factor judge and footballer's wife Cheryl Cole's been in trouble for using extensions for her advert for hair products that are assumed to be the reason for the shiney, long tresses she flops about in the film...

if i had an arab there wud be noooo way i would shave the bridle path,,i think i would do an arab plait to show off the top neck and face,,or is that the hairdresser in me that prefers long hair

Thank you for the info Keren even if I wanted to use them (which I definately don't ) I don't think my boy would stand still long enough to have his mane fiddled about with.

I was just interested to see how the rules stand on it. It's amazing what the different societies allow, especially, as Roseanne said, how they get away with adding a totally new tail!

They are NOT PERMITTED under ECAHO rules, as they constitute 'disguising' the horse (ie making it other than it naturally is, in other words, cheating), and consequently if used, would lead to you being asked to remove your entry/disqualification.

So - don't waste your money on them!

Not sure how they would stand in showing but in the pony showing world they obviously do this when they need to. Last year at HOYS I was fascinated to see 'tails' on sale on the pony paraphernalia stalls. They were basically beautiful tails, ready to affix to your naughty creature that's been scratching or for some reason doesn't have a perfect tail with every fibre the same length!!
