Having been reading all the brilliant remedies for rain scald and mud fever I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to how I can stop my mare from being itchy.

It's not sweet itch but every summer she gets really itchy and rubs out her mane and tail, she's fine in the winter. I've tried all kinds of things in the past but none that have given her 100% relief. I'd like to stop it this year before it starts!!! She's supposed to be going to Malvern, it would be nice if she has a mane and tail!

Thanks in advance.

Hi Anne, my horse is a red chestnut. He wears a uk/fly rug during the summer to help him as well as the cream.

Hi Anne,

Dennis had an unexplained itch last year too and I tried everything!

On Emma's advise I fed him Marigold flowers but I could only get the ones that Clivers in too.

I also started him on Feedmark Equidermis Plus http://www.feedmark.com/Product.asp?Product=equidermis+plus&s=show
and I still feed him this to this day.

Whatever you do you must not feed an itchy horse garlic as it stimulates an autoimmune response and as the horse is already itchy you would be making the problem worse. Beware that many feeds have it in without making it clear. FastFibre is one that spring to mind.

Thanks Honey, will give that a try.

Frances, what colour is your horse? Mine is black/bay, just wondering if it would make a difference.

I found with my horse that it was not sweet itch but was to do with uv and sunburn. He gets covered on his neck and top of tail with sun factor 50. It was just by chance that I found that this worked.

hi Anne C buy some brewers yeast and start feeding it as well. My mare is very itchy and although not sweet itch, brewers yeast was the first thing that helped her.

Hi Mrs Vlacq,

I took your advice and have been washing Passion in Vosene once a week and it's really made a huge difference. She is so much more comfortable!

Thanks for the suggestion, Passion and I are most grateful!

Edited to add: Thanks for all the suggestions.

I agree with other posts re Benzyl Benzoate. Round here I can get it from Sainsbury Pharmacy for just under £5 for 500 ml. Vets recommend it. It also works for flybites as well. One of mine got a nasty fly strike under belly, vet said try Benzyl and it cleared it. Stops my gelding tail rubbing in summer

if you go to your loal pharmacy & ask them for Benzyl Benzoate (sp) we have used this fo years for tail rubbing, main itching etc.

Hi Anne,

The Rambo sweatitch hoody was great for Pash, she only managed to get at herself for a few days after Pfynn was born (wearing no rug) I'm almost certain it is sweat itch she goes belistic when the midges are out!

Her skin was better on a natural diet with minimal/no molasses :) brewers yeast etc no garlic it encourages the midges!
Mrs Vlacq Posted - 28 Jan 2010 : 7:23:09 PM
I'd get the fly rug on her pretty soon and start feeding a supplement designed for her skin - oils/yeasts/herbs. Suppliers can advise you
ALso, bath her once a week in vosene so she always smells fresh. If you pile on the fly sprays etc, she may need washing down more often.
Some horses run because they are too hot - it is easy to over-rug when all they want is the sun on their backs for a while before the midge season kicks off!

My boy always used to rub his tail in the summer, the vet told me it wasn't sweet itch and to use benzo benzoate (from a chemist) and it worked a treat
Anne C Posted - 27 Jan 2010 : 8:25:12 PM
She's not long back from being on loan for three years, apparently she was tested for it. She's been wearing a fly rug but still managed to rub!

ps where can I buy the fly rug from?
sasha Posted - 27 Jan 2010 : 8:13:13 PM

Why don't you think it's sweetitch? I thought my boy was just itchy, he rubbed his mane and tail each summer, then I tried a fly rug early on, before midge time and hey presto, itching no more.. he DOES have sweet itch.!! He now wears a Boet from April till the end of October and we have a full mane and tail.
