thanx guys, She is an Arabian pony,

yes I would ride in a bridle for this event if my pony didn't have such an aversion to it, I've tried different bits, she's had her teeth done, everything, but the truth is My little girl doesn't like her head being interfered with when we're riding, hence me having a dilema over this bridle thing

its kinda like when I put the reins onto the bit she becomes deaf & mute & there seems to be a communication barrier, but when we ride in a rope headstall I can ride her 1 rein & she turns on a dime, backs up all at the softest touch,
right now shes happy to wear the bit so long as I don't even look like using it thats kinda why I posted the pics in the hopes that it might look like she's wearing a bridle only the reins are attached to the noseband.

I'm right fond of this little mare & she's done a lot of stuff with me, & I wouldn't part with her for nothing, sometimes you gotta put up with a few minor weird traits for a good horse, she really has been a fantastic pony, I even learnt to crack a stockwhip on horseback with her, despite both of us never having done anything like that before, so I don't mind not being able to ride her in a bit, I mean we don't need to normally, but I wanted to prove she can do stuff like this stockmans challenge cause she's a ripper pony!!!

surely it's just like using a bitless bridle? if their rules say you can't ride in a rope headcollar, then the first one certainly will get you past that; unless they say you can't ride in a bitless bridle then they will have to leave you alone. I can see how and why they would make the distinction between the two - even if they are wrong! but nevermind, rules are meant to be broken. Lovely pony!

Why dont you just ride him in a bridle with a bit for this event if thats what they want? Hes a nice pony. Is he a part bred?

thanx Smiler,

see thats what I was thinking of hoping on that neat little loophole that my horse is wearing a bridle, that there was no stipulation that the reins had to be attached to the bit, I suppose I could always attach a second set of reins to the bit & then just don't use them,

luckily it wont actually be a show its more a get together to commemorate Cattlemen here in tasmania, they have a ridden challenge, like jumping a few logs pick a bag of stuff, ride a certain distance with a billycan of water, cross a creek, crack a stockwhip that kind of stuff,

but your right they will be closer than just looking at a photo... hhmm I may have to work on this a bit more,
I find it crazy that here in Aus i can Ride an endurance ride in a rope head collar but cannot ride at other events in said head collar...

I noticed the reins on the first pic were not attached but only cos of your questions and had to look closely to see they were not attached if you can ride him / her with the bridle in the first pic but reins on nose band you may get away with it but... people will be closer at a show and and might notice easier and complain its a hard one it might be for insurance purposes you have to ride in a bridle but does it state reins have to be attached ? So thanx for all the views!!!,

unfortunately i have to take this horse to an event where it is stipulated that I can't ride in a rope head collar, Problem being I can't ride this horse in a bitted bridle...

thats why I was trying to get people to tell me what they saw!!! I guess everyone got a bit shy when they saw they were asked to tell me what they think they saw!!!

Cheers people,

The first one was definitely trick one - almost looks like a sidepull (?) bridle with bit (not used)

Second one is parelli style halter, though still uses pressure on nose.

Does it matter whether bridle, headcollar, halter? Depends who's hands are using for impact. Or is it for insurance, discipline where says bridle must be worn? - in which case I'd count the bottom pic as a bridle too

thank you soo much Sadika, you are the only one so far to actually look at the photos & question!!

yes I normally ride this pony in a rope headstall with 1 rein, so we use pressure on the nose instead of pressure in the mouth, & I would consider that I have more control of our direction & speed in this set up,

in the first picture the reins are not attached to the bit, but are attached to the noseband, I was trying to make it look like she was being ridden in a bridle & yet is not,
I wanted to see how closely people might look at such a setup as the reins attached to the noseband instead of the bit..

so thanx, your help Sadika is much appreciated...
Sadika Posted - 07 Jan 2010 : 10:03:13 AM
I would say they are both bridles - reins and pressure on mouth (top picture - but actually are the reins attached to the bit or nose band? - if latter then pressure on nose) and nose (bottom picture)
