Posted - 05 Jan 2010 : 12:59:39 PM As if it isn't enough of a struggle to try and get out for a quick ride in this weather, to top it all Ozzy and I were attacked by a mad dog yesterday..
Luckily no damage done to either of us but it really frightened him.
We were on the road and riding past a farm that has been let out as units. One of the units has a pen outside with three dogs on chains. (Pitbull type dogs) They always bark and go mad whenever we ride past and yesterday one of them was loose. It came flying out of the hedge behind us teeth bared and ready for action. It ran at Ozzy's back legs and he spun round really quickly which made the dog back off and then it ran at my friend.
I shouted at a man walking across the yard and he called the dog back, it got half way across the yard towards him and then turned round and came back at us . Poor Ozzy was beside himself.
Although no one was hurt, Ozzy is now frightened of anything that comes up quickly behind him and he spun his bottom out and bucked at 3 cars on the way home.... He has always been so good with traffic, i really hope this doesn't become a major problem.
I want to take him out again as soon as possible with my mare as she is really good with traffic but the roads were really icy this morning and we are forecast more snow tonight and the rest of this week... How long do you think it will take him to get over this? Being so young still (4 1/2) i don't want it to cause him a long term problem... |

Posted - 05 Jan 2010 : 3:16:21 PM I went to the police station this morning to report it. They said unless the dog actually causes harm then they can't do anything about it. Even if it does actually bite me or one of the horses then it will be a 'civil' matter....! They weren't even interested when i said the dogs looked very much like Pitbulls (who are supposed to be banned...)
They advised me to ring the Dog Warden at the Local Council, which i have done. I'm waiting for them to call me back.
I despair that you actually have to be injured or harmed in some way before any action will be taken.... What's the world coming to or am i sounding like a 40 year old nagging woman now...! |

Posted - 05 Jan 2010 : 2:32:46 PM How horrible! Hopefully ozzy will just be better again, given time to get over it - the cars were probably just too much after such a scary experience. Can you lead him out a bit? it's easier for them if we're not on them, and they can take their time more. Also when there's more snow it's better when it's all icy, so maybe you'll be able to get out soon.
I wonder if a chat with the RSPCA would help? |

Posted - 05 Jan 2010 : 2:20:10 PM I know it won't help your boy but I would be inclined to speak to the Police. Dog owners have to keep their pet under full control at all times, especially around livestock, which he clearly wasn't doing!
The situation could have been alot worse.....
