Hi - I have had my beautiful 5 year old pure bred arab mare since October and she is an absolute sweetie, but ever since arriving on the yard she has come into season every 3 weeks or less with avengence - her last being just this week in the middle of a very cold winter! She has squirted winked and looked lovingly at the previously one gelding (now 2 new ones) for a full 7 days each time. She has looked worn out at the end of it all, bless her!
She is in no way nasty or grumpy with me, or particularly harder to handle, but in the last couple of weeks, after the arrival of the 2 new geldings she has developed a rather dangerous "flirting" technique with one of the geldings of allowing them to sniff noses, and then she either lashes out with one of her forelegs, or turns and tries to kick him. I am not convinced she actually intends to make contact with them, but yesterday I saw the 17 3"hh Shire/Hanoverian cross gelding turn round and try and kick her back which could have been disasterous!
My questions are:
Do you think I should start to look into any supplements (and if so which) or should I give her a little longer to settle in?
Has anyone else got a mare that stays in season all year?
Could it just be a one off thing that sometimes happens with mares ie some years their seasons are "stronger" and last longer than other years?
Should I try and keep her separate from the geldings or leave them together so they can get used to each other?

PS She has had a foal, approx 2 years ago. |

I had a mare like that last year, always in season even though being covered regularly, i use a healer and she diagnosed her with a dropped uterus which meant she was on supplements for two months and then came right. |

Thanks for all your replies. Glad to hear I am not the only one, and sounds like I am getting off quite lightly really. She is still a pleasure to be around, even when she is in perpetual season! Luckily we seem to be in a break at the moment and hopefully, for her sake, she will get a month off before she starts trying to get the boys interested again! |

One of my mares came in season frequently when she first arrived, she has settled down now. Perhaps if you get through the first few months she will too. Hope so. |

I have 7 mares here, 4 who have had foals - 3 have not.
We've found over the last 2 winters that the 3 who haven't had a foal tend to "shut off" over winter with their seasons. However, 2 of the mares who have show all year round; to the stallions when stabled or the poor geldings when out! Theses two are the best mums, very loving and possessive mothers. Maybe the case with your girl?
If she's not causing problem's I'd not worry about supplements yet  |

hehe got the complete opposite - so difficult to tell when my mare is in season. makes covering difficult but probably easier than a mare in season all the time! |

Hate to tell you but my mare is 23 and is still in season Every month, and yes she entices anyone and everyone over (geldings and mares) and then roars and spins and pretends she is going to try to double barrel them, but she just dips her bum and does a very feeble half kick and doesnt make contact, but makes a dreadful scene over it all. Bless ..... |

Moatside my mare is just like yours even down to the roar and strike out with leg, being stabled alongside the boys dosent help her but cant afford any new stables at moment. |

My old Anglo mare seasoned 11 months of the year (Jan was her month off!!) - she was easy to handle and never mareish but a terrible flirt. She would call ANY boy over to her, make eyes at them and then roar and strike out with her front leg. The boys were in love and put up with her telling them off - albeit they would look a bit put out. |

I had a thoroughbred mare which came into season all year round and in the end I had to use regumate to control her seasons as she became difficult to ride and handle.
My pure bred mare came into season during the snow just before christmas, first time since april/may time last year. They all seem to have a mind of there own.
