Posted - 04 Jan 2010 : 12:16:55 PM Hey
Ive just joined the forum. I have a 20 year old arab who has a thin whispy mane and loads of it has fallen out because of his combo neck rug. He is clipped so needs a neck rug really.
I need some advise on a few questions: Does anyone know which brand of heavyweight rug (350/360g) that fits well to stop his mane rubbing out? I have heard Jumpers horse line and the Rhino Plus are good. I have weatherbeeta and these seem to be the worst at rubbing his mane.
Do you think combo's or detachable necks are better at not rubbing?
Does anyone know of any lotions or supplements to use to help his mane grow back? I have tried MegaTek rebuilder and this didnt do anything!
Any advise appreciated. Thanks

Posted - 04 Jan 2010 : 7:11:02 PM Agree with Mrs Vlacq that MTG is great for mane regrowth. Some people have reported allergic reactions but I have used it on many of mine and none have responded adversely and it has, most definitely, promoted strong, healthy hair regrowth. I have now stopped using neck covers altogether because of rubbing problems.

Posted - 04 Jan 2010 : 5:46:15 PM neck covers are ok if you take them down nightly and brush your horses neck and mane , a tip is spray mane with MR Sheen furniture polish, it has anti static properties and will keep the mane from tangling under the hood also half the price of mane detanglers ( sorry Madelaine ) |

Posted - 04 Jan 2010 : 5:14:08 PM I winter my mare out and she normally gets rubbed on her mane and shoulders this year i am using the Masta check-tech with zip neck and there is not a rub in site which is the first time in the last 5yrs that she has not rubbed. In the past i have always used Weaterbeeta, she is in foal this year dont know if her changing shape makes a difference. My other mare had a rhino but it used to rub so she is now in a orican detach a neck from weatherbeeta. |

Posted - 04 Jan 2010 : 4:14:27 PM Weatherbeeta for me! No lycra - horrid things for arab manes. You can sew additional pads either side of the wither area to prevent pressure, but my WB full necks haven't ruined a mane yet! Love Fals but haven't tried their necks so can't comment - but very warm rugs without bulkiness. MTG is good for encouraging regrowth - Madeleine sells that too! |

Posted - 04 Jan 2010 : 12:45:22 PM Hi and welcome to AL.
I think detachable hoods are definitely better and seem to rub less.
I use a Fal with a detachable hood and have no rubbing..! You could also try one of those stretchy hoods that pull on (or zip on) and put that underneath his rug and neck cover to stop the rubbing.
I have a mare with sweet-itch who rubbed a lot of her mane away in the summer, no lotions or potions i've tried ever made it grow back, it just needs time. I'm sure it will grow back in the spring / summer. |

Posted - 04 Jan 2010 : 12:24:42 PM Hi, and welcome to Arabian Lines.
I have the Rhino Plus with detatchable hood and it hasnt rubbed my geldings mane out, I think the detatchable hoods are better than the combo hoods because they dont lie at the base of the neck and rub.
I also use the Amigo rugs but think they are cut quite high up which is good for when it rains because it doesnt mean any leakage but can rub at the bottom of his mane.
