Posted - 23 Dec 2009 : 4:49:53 PM Today was D Day for weaning Maverick from his mum and it all went really well........actually I am still surprised how easy it all was!
I put everyone into the stables, then shut Maverick's top door (just incase he escaped!), had the trailer waiting on the driveway right beside the stables, led mum quickly into the trailer and drove off! She shouted to him once, but that was it. Misti has gone back to her owner's (3 miles along the road) and when she arrived she was chilled and couldn't have cared less.
I got back half an hour later to see what devistation had occured at home, only to find all calm and relaxed. Everyone was happily eating their hay so I put them all back out in the field and got some shots of them in the snow. Maverick seems so far to be none the worse for it all. He has become close to Kalidah (my chestnut mare and his half sister) over the last 3 weeks, so I think that has helped enormously. Fingers crossed he continues to be fine!
This is the view from our back door and our driveway......anyone else got much snow?!

Posted - 25 Dec 2009 : 10:06:36 PM Still all okay! Maverick came trotting over to see me this morning with a great whinnying welcome. He doesn't appear to miss mum at all. Equally mum is happily back at home and would appear to be glad to see the back of her offspring!
We've had more snow and I have to say, as pretty as it is, it's now starting to become a right royal pain in the backside!! |

Posted - 23 Dec 2009 : 5:33:02 PM I hope it all continues to go well for Maverick, what a sweet face in that fourth photo! I'm admiring your grey as well. Here in Galloway, we have a fraction less snow, perhaps more ice! It rained here last night and then dropped to minus 7, lovely! I still love this time of year, though. |

Posted - 23 Dec 2009 : 5:11:28 PM So pleased your weaning went well it can be such a stressful time for the horses and us hope it continues to go ok. We have lots of snow as well i,m sick of it now though as it arrived last tue night and has not gone and there is more due tonight according to the weather man. The troughs and taps are frozen and so i am bucketing water from the stream in our garden and they seem to drink more when the taps freeze for some reason, roll on summer is all i can say. |
