Posted - 20 Dec 2009 : 7:12:06 PM We're snowed in right now so it's given me the chance to get the video sorted of Evie and Heron at Milton Keynes 3 Day Event in September where they came 9th in the Open (equivalent to BE Novice) event.
The jumps were technical and big (an average 3'9" in height to 6' spreads). The final pull up the hill after the water was very complicated. Immediately after the water was an enormous corner (it just looks like a normal fence in the video), then an offset pair of hedges that was on an horrendous line but that Heron makes look easy and then the penultimate fence that was at least a 6'3" spread and 4' in height.
Heron de la Forge is a 14 year old French bred Anglo Arabe (classified in the UK as a part bred). 41% Arab by Sir Ig'Or out of Isis. He is a 16.3 gelding who has won the World Championship FEI Eventing at Barocca before sustaining a career threatening fall that resulted in him losing his confidence completely. He dreads drop fences (especially drop fences into water). Before Evie and he formed their life changing friendship, Heron had only ever been ridden by men. Now he is ridden by his soulmate, 14 year old Evie (who herself has suffered pretty horrendous medical problems over the last 2 seasons). He is ridden in a snaffle and cavesson noseband for dressage and show jumping, and a snaffle and grakle for cross country.
After Day 1 and the dressage, they were in 23rd place. By the end of Day 2 after the road and tracks, steeplechase and cross country, they had gone clear with time penalties (spot the over shooting of the gap in the hedge just before the water!), and pulled up to 12th. On Day 3, they went clear in the show jumping to finish 9th out of a strong class of adults. Evie was the only junior rider by about 10 years!
So, in praise of the non pure Arab - Heron de la Forge
A truly amazing partnership that is going from strength to strength: ladies and gentlemen, I give you:
