I am really worried. Last night I found a frozen sparrow in the passage of my barn type stables. I laid it in the wheelbarrow. This morning I was mucking out with the wheelbarrow in the door way. Basil was sniffing about in the barrow as usual,I was behind him scooping poop when I hear crunching and see sparrow legs sticking out of his mouth. Despite my screams he troughed down the whole thing. Is he likley to get botulism and die. This is not a wind up I an really worried. Anyone any advice ? Help.
cheers Linda

Oh dear. What a horse. I can understand your worry, but that did make me laugh. Sorry.

Yes I did wonder if he was auditioning for Christmas dinner. Never mind a bird within a bird , bird within a horse ! He is still looking fine and I am still looking for a beak and legs if you know what I mean.
cheers Linda

Glad to hear that Basil is fine....

Good job he is not for sale, he might be going "cheap"!?

Sorry, couldn't resist

LOL I also assumed Basil was a dog and wondered what the fuss was about - sorry!

Oh my word Linda! Basil is quite a character to say the least......gives a new slant to the saying 'sparrow legs'

blimey ! horse eats bird! never heard of that one (you didnt say it was your horse I could never get my horses to eat anything they hadn't tried before but I am sure he will be ok, beats my koi fish trying to eat a toady though doesn't it

Hi Ella thanks for your great reply . I feel a bit better now , the blind panic has gone. He isn't one of these horses who eats anything , he can be a fusspot.

I had a check on the net but what do you google? Horse eats bird ? From what I can gather the fact it was frozen should help as botulism seems to be from decaying carcases?

Lyndilou it was my horse who ate a bird. I will have nightmares about the sparrow legs sticking out of his mouth and the crunching noises. Ate it with gusto , no attempt to spit it out!
cheers Linda

linda if I had a pound for every bird or mouse I saw sticking out of my dogs mouths I would be rich ! I shouldnt worry too much, I am sure he will be fine and the nasties will find their way out of his system one way or another . we cant wrap our pets up in cotten wool , so just let them do what they do best , be a dog ( or a cat)

Don't worry he'll almost certainly be fine! The main worry would be if the bird had died of poisoning, but even so the quantities would most likely be too small to harm your horse.

Freezing will have killed any bacteria & his stomach acid would do the same.

That's a novel type of indigestible fibre he's added to his diet today!
