Subject: ponies needing placements or homes

Hi Helen,

On 5th December over 100 Welsh Mountain ponies ranging from this years foals to 2 year olds were auctioned at Conway, N Wales. 67 of the ponies were not sold and originally an agreement was made by the breeder to sell them at £3 each to the meatman. They were to be collected on Monday 7th December. The Meatman didn't turn up and we have a short window of opportunity to get these ponies into homes or into sanctuarys. There are currently 30 who have not got anywhere to go and the farmer has extended the time we have to place them to 19th December. The ponies are unhandled.
The ponies are subject to a deposition order and have to be microchipped for passporting at a cost of £15.00 each before we can move them.
What we need is homes or placements (even if this is temporary) for the ponies, help with transport and funds to cover the microchipping, gelding and passporting.

If you can help please call 07960 230548 Bernadette Langfield at Shy Lowen Horse and Pony Sanctuary www.shylowen.com
If you'd like to make an online donation towards this rescue please do so on this link http://www.justgiving.com/shylowen/Donate

Thanks for your help
Bernadette

MY FRIEND IS TAKING 10 OF THESE PONIES,,,, THEY ARRIVE TOMORROW !
Smiler Posted - 17 Dec 2009 : 12:01:30 PM
nikki yes the breeder is breeding more these are wild ponies living in the wild of snowdonia so the mares will already be in foal for next , i have tried to say on another site about rallying round and trying to change there ways regarding breeding that like the new forest maybe they should take the stallions off for the odd year to reduce stock etc apparently though there is one stallion that evades caption every year so unless they are all caught it would not work ! so unless something is done there will be 100 odd foals going to market each year
nikki Posted - 17 Dec 2009 : 11:53:30 AM
great news, i hope the breeder isn't breeding more!

Deerrr I didnt read the last few posts to see that you already knew that but well done to those who fought to save these little mites
LYNDILOU Posted - 17 Dec 2009 : 09:32:11 AM
I got a reply this morning from the people who were responsible for trying to rescue these poor ponies and I am happy to report that ALL were found homes and NONE will go to slaughter

Thank God there really is a Father Christmas, I could have taken one or two but couldn't afford to transport here so I am thrilled to bits
vjc Posted - 16 Dec 2009 : 12:41:36 PM
I really hope this is true, those poor ponies did not ask to be born and someone somewhere should hang their heads in shame I am a great believer in people having licenses to breed, and have to prove they are responsible to get them!!!! also limits as to how many they can breed!!! this would stop the overbreeding of these sort of ponies. A pipe dream i know, but something needs to be done for the future of these poor mites.
Weldone to all who have helped these ponies

Totally agree. These poor things have been given a chance, 1000's don't

BabsR Posted - 16 Dec 2009 : 12:09:43 PM
Wonderful news....and if it is that as previously stated, the ponies are mainly 2/3 year old colts, hope they are all castrated and so prevent more unwanted sad little Ponies from being slaughtered, which, BUT for the caring peeps, who have found them homes and saved them, were destined for the continental dinner plates.

If these ponies had all been consigned to the meat trade, from a single owner, one can only hope they do not carry on breeding!!!!

Thankyou so much to the wonderful folk who have given these ponies a chance to enjoy a peaceful Christmas time, and a bright and happy future.

Smiler Posted - 15 Dec 2009 : 6:14:48 PM
I hope this is true but on another site they say they have all now got homes / spaces fingers crossed but will try to find out if this is true
GemS Posted - 15 Dec 2009 : 3:12:49 PM
I dont understand why they are still being bred. Surely the £3 the breeder gets for meat isnt worth it and wont even come close to covering costs?
I have a field that im not using at the minute but they are a long way from me.
LYNDILOU Posted - 15 Dec 2009 : 1:31:44 PM
sorry as I see they only have colts I will have to make a donation instead hope we can help these poor ponies
jaybird Posted - 15 Dec 2009 : 12:36:35 PM
Hi all

I understand from another site that most of these ponies are 2-3yr old colts that have never been handled!! they are going to be difficult to re-home due to this, a few maybe may be taken on but 30!! overbreeding seems to shout here

bex could you pm me what forum this was please
Bex Posted - 15 Dec 2009 : 09:29:37 AM
I have posted this on another forum- a predominantly welsh pony and cob forum where I believed it may help and was surprised it wasn't already on there, however it only lasted on there 24 hours and they have removed it!!!
When I asked for an explanation I was told they had been asked to remove it by other members as it was speculation and not fact!!!

Disgraceful I think
BeckyBoodle Posted - 15 Dec 2009 : 09:13:18 AM
i have free use of a field at the end of the road, and desperately wish I could take two girlies as potential riding ponies for my girls, but given the long hours I do at the moment, I don't think it is probably realistic. If only I was nearer it could maybe have been a temporary solution, but Cambridge is a bit of a trek.

If wishes were pennies hey?

Thank you Cazza, link spread around. Hopefully one day people's attitudes to animals will change, eventually!
