Some of you may know from my mums thread on T+C last night that yesterday after finding Sammy in a terrible way he was transferred to Leahurst last night.
They have operated on him and it seems part of his small intestine had gone through into part of his stomach and this had sealed it off and stopped the toxins spreading through his body, this made it all the harder to diagnose as he wasn't presenting as simply as a colic and temp/colour and heart rates seemed ok. He was in theatre for about 4 hours and they rung me at around 2.40am to tell me he was out of theatre but they were only giving him a 30% chance at that point.
He has got through the night and is alert this morning but the next few days are critical whilst he's in intensive care. I know he's in the best hands and we had to give him this chance. The vet had said whilst he was at home as he wasn't responding to pain relief that the only other thing she could do was pts. I rang our old vet who saw Sam as a 3 hour baby and he asked all about his symptoms and said if was an insured horse i would already have him there. That was enough for us we had to give him a chance. I have said that now he is through surgery if there are any further complications i do not want him operating on as the chances are so slim and the surgeon said that if he was her horse she would do the same.
So all we can do now is wait and hope so much that he pulls through.
My mum delivered him 15 1/2 years ago and we had his mum Sadie until she was 27.
He is our special boy.
Be strong Sammy sweetheart xx

Alice and Carol I am so desperately sorry, at least you were able to give him his chance and you also knew when it was time to let him go. RIP Sam. Hugs to those left behind.

So glad to hear this, I've been so busy I've not logged on at all for a couple of days.

I've just quickly sent my donation but it's come back saying it's been sent to Tim Paddon at Tengtools? Is that right? Hope so !

Must dash.... heck look at the time, where DO the days go !

He is still doing ok!! Not coming home today as discussed last week before he colicked again however they are upping his rations. They have told me i won't hear from them again over the weekend unless there is a problem and i can ring in for my report on monday morning. They are upping the feed to the same amount as when he colicked last time so really hoping this time it passes through without a problem. So hope they don't ring me now!! Thanks everyone so so much for the donations, everything helps, even the transport of him there and hopefully back is so expensive and all your kindness means that it is one less thing to worry about. We really appreciate it thankyou thankyou!!
Will hopefully have nothing more to report now until Monday xxx

brill news, so glad to hear this, hoping he continues to improve
Kazzy Posted - 11 Dec 2009 : 10:36:24 AM
Fingers crossed that he carries on improving Can I just say that my friends horse who was at Leahurst for similar surgery took nearly two weeks to stop having these colic attacks after every feed they gave him.

He did come back like a hatrack having lived on bran mash for nearly 2 weeks but all these years later he is still with us

Right!!! I had missed this thread as I have been too busy supporting Buffy! It seems Buffy is okay so Sammy needs some help. Good wishes and healing vibes on the way.

Fantastic update, keep it up Sammy and yes the loonyness comes with the territory
Honeyb060674 Posted - 10 Dec 2009 : 6:04:54 PM
Thats more like it!! (sorry to inform you but the loony bit is unavoidable !!)
dinkidoo Posted - 10 Dec 2009 : 5:54:51 PM
Quick update as ive got a thundering migraine starting think everything is catching up with me

Sam has had a GOOD day!! They have walked him out in hand a lot and he has been grazing, no more colicky episodes and they have increased his rations. They are keeping him on a low dose of painkiller in case he was colicking through discomfort when food passes through the join in his intestine. He is bright in himself and they are really hoping that it was just the discomfort and that his intestine is allowing things to pass albeit a bit tenderly at the moment. Whatever was causing the pain seems to have passed so again a crucial 24 hours in case another blockage occurs. At least he is still bright and fighting though, things would be even worse if he had given up on himself. He's certainly keeping us going mum and me are a pair of nervous wrecks at the moment everytime the phone goes i panic, the vet must think im a bit of a loony!
So hopefully won't hear from the vets tonight, i can't take many more ups and downs
More tomorrow fingers crossed its good again!
Thanks again for your support you are all stars xx
Callisto Posted - 10 Dec 2009 : 1:17:09 PM
