Being a bit of a newbie to breeding I was sondering how old is too old to consider breeding from a brood mare that has already produced several foals?

When you can not get her pregnant?

When she starts to look old?

When she has had a certain number of foals?

I am not looking for a set age as I know that it will vary from one horse to another just thoughts on the matter.

Dot.

I'm so pleased that Rose Aboud "told" Karen she was well enough - the foal she was carrying in that photo is none other than my new colt Alkara Cassino aka Chips who I'll be collecting from Karen in 4 weeks....and counting! Rose is again safely in-foal and looks superb.

I agree, if the mare has had healthy foalings in the past and gets in foal easily then let her!

its like the others have said... it all depends of your mares health and condition.

my old mare N.A. Elegantka was retired this year as 21 years old... we did try to get her in foal but she has got several cysts so it has not been possible... she is now back with the old lady where i bought her from.

my friend in Denmark who has 150 horses generally breeds on her mares, so they have the last foal at the age 25 (if the mare is healthy).

Here is Rose Aboud, aged 21 with her colt at foot and in foal

Let the mare tell you if she's well enough in herself to produce for you. Best of luck

I agree with what has already been said, just let the vet give her a once over as a lot depends on the condition of her uterus. Some mares can breed well into their twenties with no problems, while some younger ones can have cysts and fluid retention problems. Usually mother nature has the last say and if the mare is not a1 inside it can be very difficult to get her in foal, or for her to have a full term healthy pregnancy.

I asked my vet this the other day as my oldest is 21 next year. He said as long as she's fit and well, and I realise she may not get in foal, there's no reason why she shouldn't have another foal. If I do decide to try again with her I'll get her checked over first to be on the safe side.

My mare had had 4 foals by the age of 8, before I bought her. At 18 I had her checked by the vet who said there was no reason why she couldn't have a foal. She foaled in the middle of the day with no problems at all. Her foal is now 17 and still with me. Her mother lived until the grand age of 34 and had her foal with her every day.
So it is possible.

Also, I'd be looking at how she coped with her last foal. If she kept condition and it didn't bring her down too much, then again I wouldn't have thought it a problem.

I have very little experience of breeding, but I do know of one mare who was breeding into her late teens.

As long as the mare is healthy and given a clean bill of health by a vet I don't see a problem.
