I'm looking to buy a generator, mainly to run lights at the stables but what I know about them I could write on a matchbox Can anyone give me recommendations, what I should look for etc etc. Any hints, tips, experiences appreciated, what db is reasonable? Obviously I'd like it as quiet as poss

Thanks

I'd go to Screwfix Fee. They normally do free next day delivery if over a certain amount too

Thanks guys Do you think it's better to get strip lights apposed to normal lights? That's good a genni will light a flood light, I'd like one or two! Hate these dark winters

I'll avoid the 2 stroke ones too, is ebay the best place to look for one?

i got a battery power pack which has a socket on the back to plug your lights in.
it costs about £80, and it is very quiet, hardly any noise. you can also take it home with you, so no chance of it getting nicked.
also very good as you can jump start your car, and put air in your tyres.

Try to avoid 2 stroke unless your happy about mixing oil and petrol, they are reasonably good but it is a clart on. I have quite a large 4 stroke now but I do have a secure store for it so I don't need to move it around unless I need to. I did get a great one from B&Q (it got stolen prior to secure store !)for about £80 and was able to move it around even when full of fuel, I have 8 lights with 100 watt bulbs and it ran those without problem.

Edited to add I bought my big gennie from EBay, it came from Holland and was very reasonably priced...under £200 inc delivery but I do need a adaptor plug to be able to use it !

i've just bought one with my dad's advice (sparky!) and the best 1 we found around was the £140ish 1 from Screwfix. to run that sort of thing need to look at the Watt output - a lot of the advertise the maximum output but look for the general running output and go for 1 that runs at over 800w otherwise it won't be powerful enough. not so sure about the noise levels, some are specially quiet but a lot more expensive.

Ah, interesting. I think i'll be investing in one too soon, and what i know about them i could fit on the back of a 5p!!!

I have a 2.8 genni which operates 4 stable lights and 2 outside flood lights, also capable of running power tools/kettle, pumping water from my well etc.
Before this one I had a small "suitcase" one - more than able to run lighting but not powerful enough to do anything else.
On a noise level - mine is not the quietest but it is not too bad - I paid about £150 for it 3 years ago and it has never had a problem.
