Further on from a post I made last week re spooking. It was suggested by a few that rhythm beads may help. I knew I had some somewhere! I put them on Magic today and lunged her. She was fine with them. Should I be ok to ride in them tomorrow? Do horses seem to take to the jingling ok?

Hi Alethea,

This might explain

"Rhythm Beads”, whilst relatively unknown in the UK, are extremely popular in other parts of the world. Worn around your horse's neck just like a necklace, they are far more than just a stylish item to add to your tack room!

Providing, a soft, musical ring as you ride, horse beads help you and your horse to relax, focus and find a rhythm, and of course they look beautiful too! There are even reports of spooky horses being calmed. For all riders, in particular the nervous, horse beads are a helpful way to get in tune with your horse. They can be a significant aid to concentration, helping horses from being distracted whilst out hacking or working in a school

An additional feature, is that horse beads can be useful if you ride off-road for alerting other people, riders and animals that you are approaching. And for those very quiet barefoot horses (with or without boots), the lovely jingle will let people know you are around the corner!

Horse Beads are particularly popular with natural horsemanship students, endurance and dressage riders, but any rider will enjoy their own unique set of horse beads

A Little on the History of Horse Rhythm Beads

Since man first sat upon a horse, decoration has been traditional - Romans, Native Americans, English Draft horses, the Amish and their Haflingers, all over the world, many cultures and traditions of horseman have decorated their equine companions. We can even find biblical references - The prophet Zechariah said that bells upon horses shall be 'holiness to the lord'!

Although the modern application is somewhat different, Rhythm Beads themselves are steeped in Native American tradition; historically, they were worn to protect against evil spirits, and to provide strength, courage and vitality; but as with any culture, they were simply another way to decorate horses for pure pleasure!

I am interested to see how this goes too. Kazhak do you hack out listening to your MP3 player, its something I considered but was worried about not hearing any approaching buses, other things which may be hazardous.

Oh no Annie!!!!! Poor you!! Will let you know how it goes with the beads, but I feel at £10.50 delivered to my door from USA, it's worth a try

I'm Not Sure about rhythm beads either but I use an inexpensive mp3 player & external speakers, & play music for my Arabian pony mare, I find she focuses better, she even has her favorite songs too,

but would still be interested to know how you go with the beads

I've never heard of these but am really interested. Where do you get then from and how do you attach them?
Slave 2 Magic Posted - 30 Oct 2009 : 10:07:12 PM
They will hopefully aid concentration. The rhythm of the bells should distract from any spookyness. I'll let you know how we get on tomorrow.

Sorry, can't answer your question but intrigued to know how you get on with them. How are they supposed to work?
