Goodness - I am paying £2.75 for mixed quality straw and £4 a bale for okay but not great hay... the penalty for living in Surrey where anything to do with horses is vastly inflated in price

I'm paying £2.75 for straw, which is not good. I can get it cheaper but I am really pleased with the quality so I'm sticking with it

I pay £1 per bale of straw and £2 per bale of hay and its good quality, just lucky my supplier hasnt put his prices up as he is the cheapest I know of in Bristol and surrounding area.

just sourced some small bales wheat straw £1.20 per bale.
Last year I bought a couple of very large rectangular bales which were delivered with my haylage but it was very short and difficult to handle.

I pay 0.75 for a bale of straw and £2.00 for a bale of hay, and £30 for a large haylage bale. East Anglia .

Newcastle - £15.00 delivered for a large round of lovely clean barley straw. Haylage is the best you can buy, divine smelling and absolutely no waste, £25.00 delivered for a large square bale, there are slightly cheaper rounds available but I don't see the need to change when the neds approve so much

We are paying £15 for a "quadrant" square bale of wheat straw locally (W. Mids). Luckily we have a barn FULL of big round bale hay made with NO rain on it and nitrate free plus lots of haylage.

In fact we need to eat our way into the barn this winter

I can get good quality clean wheat straw in the midlands for £1.80 a bale.

I'm paying £2.50 for small bale straw and £3 for small bale hay, both have gone up by 50 pence a bale recently and the quality of both is variable. The size of the straw bales also seem to get smaller and lighter with each year that passes. I was paying £30 for large bale haylage and have not been able to get large bale straw at all this year. Sadly my wages don't seem to be increasing at the same rate as horse feed and bedding do .

Here in Somerset the straw was very poor again this year. I am paying £20 for a large rectangular bale of wheat straw which is a very dirty colour. Second class hay is £25 per large rectangular bale. I have had to soak this too as it was made quite late and full of thistle stems and dead docks etc.
The round bale haylage has now gone from £25 to £28 per round bale - but the quality differs from bale to bale and some have loads of white patches in them which get thrown on the dung heap. I hate paying for stuff which I have to burn or throw away. It looks as if this year is not going to be any better than last - and the price has gone up because the price of diesel has gone up; but it never went down when the prices did.

We bought our straw off the field in september, it is not very good wheat straw and very light bales. With delivery charges it works out at £1.75 per bale and we bought 400!

Paying the same amount for my hay and straw as I did last year.

£3 for nice hay and £1.50 for Barley straw

I bought my straw (50 bales) at the same time as my hay and paid £2 a small bale back in September, but this is the same price as I paid last year,

I am paying £2.50 for very clean barley straw, small bales!!! and, on a sore subject, £4.00 a small bale hay, again very clean hay, but, in fairness i have used the same supplier for the last 10 years, and this is the 1st time they have ever put their prices up.

Cinnypony Posted - 30 Oct 2009 : 8:52:06 PM
Got given 2 large bales of barley straw, but now need to go buy some!
rosie Posted - 30 Oct 2009 : 7:57:05 PM
I was originally quoted £2 a bale, when I was paying £1 a bale last year!
After a search, got some excellent straw for £1.50 a bale, but thats here in Yorkshire.
dinkidoo Posted - 30 Oct 2009 : 7:56:25 PM
We were paying £2.50 for straw that could either be gorgeous or horrific for last 18months but now are buying big round bales which are lasting 2 weeks bedding down 5 which are costing £20. I still think this is expensive as approx 10 bales in it. I remember when it used to be £1 a bale delivered!
weirton Posted - 30 Oct 2009 : 7:53:23 PM

I'm paying £2 per bale too. I tried several sources and all the same price. Seems it is the Mid/East Devon rate unless you're very lucky.

I had to buy some small bales in and barley straw was £2.25 a small bale - more than I sold my hay for per bale!!!!
