I've done a bit of side saddle in the past adn I was looking to do this with my older boy. Does anyone have experience of this? If anyone has any ideas on how to start this with an Arab, I would be really interested. I just think with the amount of presence Arabs exude naturally that this may be another arena at which they excel!!

Dear Suzes,

I have only just seen this thread and I'm sorry I didn't see it sooner!

I see you were asking about someone in Scotland who could be recommended...

I know just the lady!! She is Shirley Justice Vose and she is just the lovliest person you could ever meet. She is a master saddler who specialises in side-saddle. And, she likes Arabs!!!

She came over to Bute to fit Buffy with a saddle and I found her brilliant. She has the interest of the horse to the fore and she even rode Buffy for me as I was not having a good day health wise.

I know of a few friends who have used Shirley and we cannot recommend her highly enough.

If you want to pm me, I can give you her details.

Kind regards,

Sandra

The SSA are not very 'up' with email - you'd probably do better to ring them!

Thanks for all the advice. I have emailed the side saddle association and as yet have had no reply so I'm feeling a bit disappointed with them at the moment.

It's such a shame when these associations don't get back to you - no wonder fewer and fewer people are doing these things!!

My gelding did side saddle (before I had him)and looked lovely. He is dead many years now (died at almost 31 years old) so I am sure your boy would be lovely; it is so elegant. Go for it.

I have had a side saddle lesson at Roger Philpotts yard i joined a mini bus "do" from the side saddle association and off we went to Kineton, Warwick...The horse i had was so well schooled,,,,,Roger asked me to reign back then go into canter which the horse did so easily......side saddle looks so elegant and i love to see it, Warrington show has a well represented class for it xxx check it out

my little Arab Blysara excels at side saddle and the arab paces are just perfect for this discipline. I found it quite hard to get a side saddle to fit but finally found a side saddle fitter with an arab of her own. We solved this fit problem with a wykham pad and now there is no stopping us! You can hire side saddles from a lady called Liz Turner from the side saddle association and she comes to fit them for you, so there is every oppertunity to give it a go!

I have done side saddle with my anglo and also my pure bred. The biggest problem is getting a side saddle to fit the horse, both of mine are very round with next to no wither. Get help from a side saddle fitter otherwise you can damage their backs. I have done showing, demonstrations at game fairs and also sponsored rides with mine, up to 16 miles.

Just had a look on it for you www.sidesaddleassociation.co.uk and they've changed the format around, doesnt list the regional groups, but maybe if you got in contact with them

Suzes, if you go on the Side Saddle Association website and look for the area group you live in, they should have any instructors in your area listed there.

When I joined Roger Philpott’s side saddle class (group) some years ago there was a purebred called Chlio who was there with her rider every week. She wasn’t half as quiet and amenable as my Arabs but she was lovely as a sidesaddle horse, very elegant indeed, and she jumped sidesaddle too.

Mrs Vlacq had a Palomino part bred (who's name escapes me at the moment) who used to do side saddle with the riding holiday kids.

I was one of them for a few years!

I remember him being a cheeky chap - he'd see if you had stickability!!

I must have a picture somewhere

Sorry It's taken me a while to reply - Herbie has had very bad mud fever for the last 10 weeks.

Thanks for the replies! Ginger Horse - Pauline looks very elegant on Shah Pasha!! I'm hoping to look a bit more into this next year. Can anyone recommend someone in Scotland?

Have the saddle fitted, have an instructor with you to correct you're seat as and when needed and get on with it. If you're horse is well schooled and does'nt react to the balancing strap you should have noproblems.

We were at the National SS show with my friend Caroline and her Highland. We saw a lot of Shar Pasha as we were parked close to them for the 3 days. They were brilliant and did such a wide range of classes. I also remember SS at Malvern - Daytona? and a well-filled class at Ascot in 1987.

How elegant your friend looks on Shar Pasha.

How is he bred?

There is a lady near me (infact ihavent seen her for a while) and she rides side saddle on the bridlepath near me, it looks Anglo Arab and is white/grey and she dresses up. very nice indeed

My college tutor has a part bred arab, but he's got a very arab looking face, and she rides him side saddle and it looks great.
Tzarina Posted - 13 Sep 2009 : 1:08:09 PM
There is an arab Shar Pasha whose owners name escapes me who has done really well at the National Side Saddle show.

Eileen's son David still has all her side saddles and habits and many photos of his mum.
Sadika Posted - 13 Sep 2009 : 12:39:09 PM
There used to be a class for side-saddle at AHS Ascot. I remember the stallion Carrik Crystif doing well.
MinHe Posted - 13 Sep 2009 : 10:44:23 AM
My friend the late Eileen Tatam rode Arabs side-saddle for many, many years - right into her 80s!
