Does anyone do their own & what do you use? Every year I send outdoor rugs for washing & reproofing and every year Honey lightweight ends with patches where it leaks in a bit.Grrrr

I have successfully used the Nikwax sealant on rugs. I Googled it and phoned for advice and they sent it out next day. I hand the bottle in to my local rug wash to use in their industrial washing machine instead of whatever they usually use.

I have also used it myself by spreading out a wet (clean) rug onto the ground (clean slabs!) and brushing it on. It worked very well.

I would love just to be able to brush the mud off but mine seem to get a bit too smelly - don't know what my two roll in

Thanks for the input guys. You're right washing doesn't do them any favours but they are sooo LOVELY when they come back LOL!! It just seems to be the lightweight...will have to investigate your suggestions! Brick sealant Mmmm Interesting!!

Thomson water selant is fantastic your rugs will never leak again, and it is designed to use on fabrics!

I never wash mine either and have two Rhino lightweights that are still totally waterproof after at least 7 years---can't remember exactly how old they are. Likewise my heavy Rambos and Wugs, most of which are much older than that. I used to find that getting them cleaned knocked the stuffing out of them and they weren't as warm or as waterproof. A good airing and brush inside and out and they are fine.

I've given up washing my rugs and have definitely noticed that the rugs that haven't been washed stay more waterproof. Last time I had them "profesionally" cleaned and reproofed none of them came back waterproof so I'm not doing that again!

Ditto Caryn, I've had my Fals around 9 years and have only had them cleaned once. You'd think they'd be manky but they're absolutely fine and still completely waterproof and beautifully warm. (Only gripe is that the clasps tend to tear the tape they're on)

My trip to Derby House has resulted in a Mark Todd rain sheet. Looks like one of those classic Saturday afternoon Malvern clouds about to burst over us so I'm off to try it on him...

I never wash my rugs! I let them air thoroughly after the winter, brush any caked-on mud off and then roll up, put in a strong plastic sack and tie the top.

They're fine again in the autumn. I've got Fal-Pro Vikings of varying ages (probably between 10-13 years old) and none of them leak.

My spelling!!
Roseanne Posted - 18 Jul 2009 : 1:36:01 PM
Thought that was a calmer Vera!

I don't wash and reproof unless really necessary. The more you wash these things the less waterproof they become.

When you think of it, how can you have a detergent or soap that washes away serous horse dust and body grease and grime and expect a combined 'proofer' to be effective?

I reckon if a rug leaks, it's time to get a new one... Lots of brilliant sales around now though. I'm off to my local Derby House today to get a rain sheet for Lance.

Have to agree, try Sadelin (sp?) it does exactly what it says on the tin!

LW always seem to leak if more than 3wks old and more than a shower of rain comes down!!

Trick is not to wash them too much for starters, but we reproof using brick sealant and so far so good. Most of the real horse rug proofers I've tried don't work anyway
