About a month or so ago I put a post on here about Hartleys hock which he had somehow got an infection in. Well the infection cleared up with the antibiotics, there was no abcess like the vet suspected. However, Hartley has now been left with the biggest capped hock you have ever seen. The vet scanned it last week, he said there's no infection or foreign body, the swelling is caused by thickened tissue not fluid. When I asked how I could get it to reduce he just suggested massaging it which I had been doing anyway. I just wondered whether anyone could recommend anything else I could do or whether there are any homeopathic remedies or anything I could give him. I have been rubbing arnica cream into it, I thought it was worth a try. Also I thought about getting a hand held electric massager, has anyone else every used one of these on their horse and if so did it do any good?

Any advice gratefully received as always.

I have used DMSO in the past. Don't think you can get it from vets any more, but I think someone posted on here before that you can get it on the internet or something? VERY good, but you need to get going on it ASAP and really keep it up. My horse that I used it on came back completely normal and has never had a problem since. Swelling did not reappear and pocket did not refill with liquid at any point. Not sure if this is exactly the same as thickening of tissue, but defo worth a try?

PS, sent you a PM.

I have used DMSO which my vet gave me and it was great for reducing the swelling.

Dog oil is suppose to be very good for massaging swellings.

I think you can get it from herbal shops etc etc.

Janet

edit. just googled Dog Oil and they still sell it and you can buy it at Holland and barrett. its very cheap aswell about £2.00 a tub.
