I have just had a call from my husband, a girl that he works with that I have met, keeps her horse at a local livery yard and the field had absolutely no grass and was covered in ragwort, she has just bought the mare and where she bought it from was where all the ragwort was, she called a vet that said the symptoms were likely to be worms, well she wormed the horse for five days and the mare looks terrible now skin and bone with a huge belly and has become wobbly on her hind legs and dribbling, I have given my husband the number of my vets and told her to get them out straight away as the vet she used said to give another five days worming sounds pretty bad to me, poor horse, will keep you updated x

What is it with Vets......that they always assume a thin horse is suffering from worms!!!! Perhaps if he had taken a blood sample (and taking into account that this poor mare had come from a property with a heavy ragwort infestation) this poor sad mare may have been saved several more days of suffering.

From what you say........it may well be that she has to be PTS, to save any further suffering, as sounds the liver is so badly damaged
beyond repair. Very sad

knowing how she is about her first horse, which she still has, I think she is going to be heartbroken

Such a shame, at least she has tried with the mare and took it away from the situation even if she isnt with her for long.

I think she bought it as it looked so poor and had a vet out who said to worm it and when she got him out again he said to give it another five days worming programme, so she sought my husband out at work and asked him to ring me and ask me what I thought, I gave her the number of my vet and told her to phone him immediately.......what I didn't say was frrom what she has said I think it will be a pts jobby poor thing, this poor horse has been suffering and getting worse for the last five days, I wish I had known sooner as it would not have spent the last five days getting to the state it is in now

Poor mare, and why worm a horse that has not been seen by a vet and that is in poor condition? Hope your vet can sort it out.

Hi Gerri, I'm afaid it sounds like ragwort damage but the vet will be able to do bloods and see, I hope it isn't poor mare,
