Posted - 02 Jul 2009 : 11:50:35 AM http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/nottinghamshire/8129826.stm I realise that this part of the forum is supposed to be about horses only, but it is the most read, which is why I've put it here. I heard this on the radio this morning and I'm truly shocked and disgusted by the senseless death of two police dogs. How on earth can they prosecute the public for leaving dogs in baking cars when a supposedly competent police dog handler can be so negligent. http://www.nottinghamshire.police.uk/contact/feedback/ Incidently, if you feel as strongly about this as I do why not e-mail them on the link above. |

Posted - 04 Jul 2009 : 7:48:08 PM unbelievable and so distressing, how can a so called dog handler be so stupid as to leave dogs inside a car in this heat!!! questions and punishment must be handed out!!! |

Posted - 04 Jul 2009 : 09:44:57 AM Have to agree with you Gerry, unless he physically could not get to the dogs, there is absolutely no excuse for this - it has to be one of the most horrendous ways to die - disgusting. |

Posted - 03 Jul 2009 : 8:00:00 PM unless he was knocked unconscious, had heart attack.... then he should be facing a manslaughter charge at least....... those dogs cooked slowly to death there is absolutely NO excuse for letting that happen, lets hope he does the decent thing and prove that he was a decent human being and feel so bad about it that he does exactly that......... take his own life, but I am betting he won't even take responsibility for it, just like the officers who pushed a man around till he dropped dead and the ones that shot a brazillian at point blank range several times in the head. and we had a dog handler come to the farm when someone had tried to steal our lorry and he was neither kind or nice to his dog, he yelled at it and shouted at it to get in the van I was not impressed |

Posted - 03 Jul 2009 : 7:41:23 PM Actually, I agree with Barbara on this one. Don't know the whole story and until I do don't feel I can judge him. What I do know is that this person now has to live with the consequences. I think I would have to take my own life if I'd been in that position. |

Posted - 03 Jul 2009 : 2:46:44 PM Sorry Barbara, but I totally agree with Zan on this. There IS no excuse, the dogs should not have been left to cook in the officers car, he was NOT on duty, but went into the station for some reason. Thanks Zan for correcting my link (must have been having a blonde/senior moment).

Posted - 03 Jul 2009 : 09:23:27 AM No Barbara---there can be no excuse for this. No hold up so serious that these dogs couldn't be released from their oven hell sitting right outside the police station. Anyone, with any sense, who had to leave their dogs in this situation for 2 minutes while they nipped out to do something, would make very sure it was just 2 minutes and would be on tenter hooks to get back to them, but actually, even leaving them at all in this heat was unforgiveable. I don't care what the story is---this shouldn't have happened. |

Posted - 03 Jul 2009 : 07:42:15 AM Sorry Barbara, but I feel very vicious about the police force in UK, just one of the many reasons I left the Uk, they use their uniform to bully people, I have never ever been in trouble with the police, Thank God, but whenever needed them they were unhelpful and arrogant, apart from one lady officer, but they have killed so many people just recently or their actions have caused death and they are never ever convicted and punished for it, My mother worked for the Police years ago in the warrant offices as a secretary and I have this argument with her all the time, I stay well clear of all of them as would not trust them as far as I could throw them. and beleive me there is NO excuse for leaving dogs in a car in that heat and by the way the dogs held the rank of sergeant so if anyone had hit of kicked the dog they would be done for assaulting a police officer and yet the police are taking no action against the officer concerned I think it is disgusting..... another policeman, another death human or otherwise is tooo much for me. |

Posted - 03 Jul 2009 : 07:18:42 AM While I am horrified as I just adore German Shepherds and have had several over the years (and still look after my son's when he goes away) let us not judge until we know the story.
There may have been a reason the dogs were left in the car/van unintentionally if the police officer was delayed for some reason.
The police dog handlers I have known have always loved their dogs and they weren't just "part of the job" to them, they were much loved friends and part of the family.
If it turns out that the dogs were left without a thought then we can all condemn but until then it is unfair to judge without the facts. "Incidentally, I believe there were 2 or 3 calls on the tannoy at Midland Show re dogs in cars last Sunday. Unbelievable. I put 4 lots of factor 50 sun lotion on at the show, it was that hot....". These people were out enjoying themselves and had no real reason to bring their dogs never mind leave them in their cars and the same could have happened to them.
If the dogs were just left in the car I will be the first to condemn as dog handlers should always have the welfare of their dogs to the forefront but please don't all be so viscious in your comments until you know the facts. I for one am proud of the police force we have here in the UK. Yes there are a few rotten apples but they are everywhere. By and large they do a very good job and don't deserve the public bashing they seem to get.

Posted - 02 Jul 2009 : 6:17:38 PM This is the same police force that managed to 'lose' 7 guns and ammo by driving round in a Transit with the door not properly closed!!! And who only cautioned the drug addict (NHS employee who was high on licensed medical drugs) who beat seven shades of sh*t out of my partner in a hospital carpark.
Still, they were probably too distracted by the need to be out in their speed camera vans raising funds - I mean catching dangerous drivers.
Mind you, there is one thing about Notts police - they aren't as crap as the Derbyshire force, who rang *me* to ask if I'd found my stolen horsebox when THEY were the ones supposed to be looking for it!!!!

Posted - 02 Jul 2009 : 5:30:05 PM Vile people! I have sent a humdinger - very politely worded, but to the point - email to the Notts Police. We'll see what they say. My beloved German Shepherd was out with me at 5am this morning and 7am and then it just got too hot, so she lay indoors with all windows doors and hatches open to catch the river breeze until her doggy sitters arrived at 12 to let her out for a wander and a swim! I'll take her out in the open truck to the horse tonight and she can lay on cool stone yards. If an aged granny (me) can manage to organise this why cant the highly trained police? Makes me feel sick with rage. |

Posted - 02 Jul 2009 : 5:01:48 PM I'm afraid I have never had a very high opinion of police dog handlers in general, but this is beyond belief. Thanks for the email contact Lanabanana---I have emailed. I hope they get flooded with emails and then perhaps the handler will be prosecuted as he/she most certainly should be. I love all dogs but GSDs have a special place in my heart. How dare they treat these wonderful dogs so casually and cause them to suffer such a terrible death. |

Posted - 02 Jul 2009 : 4:44:45 PM It is truly unbelievable, how can anyone think it's ok to shut a dog in a car in this weather, let alone a 'professional dog handler' A dog in a car will quite literally be cooked alive in this weather! My three are all lying around indoors, I have 2 ceiling fans and 2 portable fans running all the time at the moment and they're still finding it hot in a house with the doors open. Thankyou to those of you who've e-mailed them about this. |

Posted - 02 Jul 2009 : 4:27:55 PM Seems the handler was not working and had the dogs in his own car...he has not even been suspended.....that is the very least that should happen to him....R.I.P poor dogs. |

Posted - 02 Jul 2009 : 2:15:26 PM I am just so shocked at this, seems the dogs were in a private car ?? How can this have happened ? most officers only have 1 dog so was this a dog training officer ?
He must be feeling terrible and so he should. |

Posted - 02 Jul 2009 : 2:02:12 PM I have emailed and asked what is happening to the handlers of these precious, beautiful dogs who have died needlessly. Are they going to be punished? Do they love dogs or is it a job? Sorry, I adore German Shepherds and reading this has really upset me. But, thank you, Lanabana for bringing it to our attention. |
