I'd definately find a really good instructor that won't rush you, but will get you going

I'd have classed myself as a reasonable rider, Ive been at it for 20 years !! BUT I'd developed SOOOOOO many bad habits and was awfully crooked which would have an awful impact on boysie were i not very conciously trying to correct it with the help of a brilliant instructor

All I would advise is take your time. I backed my girl after leading out in hand, lunging and long reining over months. The first time i sat on her it was like she had been ridden for years, incredibly proud and momentus. Then we just started hacking with a nanny horse(ALWAYS ended on a good note - paramount) and always had fun. Then light schooling, also took her out and hired other indoor or outdoor riding arenas for variation and went from there really. After such a success with her I would never do it any different again.

Enjoy your horses and ponise and have a great summer together! x

Susie - what a wonderful boy..! He looks fantastic.

My boy was 4 in March. I bought him on May 11th, spent a few weeks leading him in hand and then leading him form my 16 year old welsh cross mare and then legging my niece up on him bare back. I have been hacking him lightly (walk and trot only)for about 3 weeks. I'm riding him every other day and maybe once or twice a week doing some in hand work with him in the field or in a friends school.

I do some very basic schooling while out hacking (asking him to move over from my leg, halt and then walk on etc) but have not ridden him in the school since he was backed (as we don't have one and i have to pay each time to use one up the road) I haven't started to ask him to work rounded or on the bit yet, as i thought he was probably too young...? What do you all think? Should i have a lesson once a week to start basic schooling (Although i'm a confident rider i'm not a well schooled rider . I've developed a lot of bad habits over the years and haven't had a lesson for well over 10 years....!)

I was also keeping his workload fairly light as i think he still has quite a bit of growing / maturing to do and i don't want to overstress his joints. (i'm also quite heavy 10st 10lb and i don't want to give him back ache ... - he is only 14.2hh)

What else could i or should i be doing? Any help appreciated.!

Susie he is gorgeous and he looks like he's listening and concentrating hard on what he's doing. Look forward to seeing more of you both.

Tracey - congratulations to you, Chelsea and Shani. What a special moment for you and your daughter.

Me to , Me to.....

Today was a very exciting day and a very proud day too!

I have been lunging our 3 year old for the last month and very slowly we have been adding surcingle, bridle etc. And today after two days of my 14 year old daughter (who is a first time backer!!) lying over her I legged her up and she sat up on her!

Im so proud at my daughter and Shani who both took it in their stride. Shan looked around as if to say "Whats the fuss, mum?" and Chelsea was beaming like a cheshire cat! What a lovely moment and a lovely end to the weekend.

Will post pics soon, next step will be walking on the lunge!

Well, I can finally join those of you with newly backed youngsters!! Having now sat on Rasheeka, my next aim is to get her moving with me on board (we're taking it slowly.....), then me riding in a saddle (she's used to the saddle and stirrups), then starting schooling, then short hacks, then longer hacks, then lessons, etc etc.

As you may see I don't really have a "plan" as such, I'm starting a new job in a week so will have to see how that goes (it's casual so if I don't like it I won't stay for more than a few weeks! How's that for dedication?) but all being well I'll ride her 4 or 5 times a week until autumn then see where we are at that. I'd like to be doing short hacks with her by then, our lanes are very quiet so safe for a novice. And I hope to take her to a nearby school for some lessons once she's walking and trotting confidently.

My plan for the rest of the summer is just to lightly hack, a couple of local shows and then over the winter back to schooling and some walk trot stressage

What a lucky boy to have you as his owner Pheonix. You sound wonderful. I don't think he can ask for much more than that. We have got several youngsters on the go just now - (not all Arabs). They are at varying stages and 3 will be backed this summer if education continues to go well.

I've been doing lots of work with our 2yr old Warmblood colt as he is going to Futuriry this year, and because he needs lots to think about. Whenever we finish a session, he puts his head on my shoulder and looks me in the eye, as if to say "didn't I do well Mum". We always end our sessions like this, followed by a long hug. He's a very cuddly boy.

My boy will continue hacking out and we're having weekly lessons with a fantastic instructor balance and consistancy! ( bad habits die hard and all that)

Hopefully we'll be brave enough to start doing a few little jumps towards the end of the year

Lots more shows under saddle and loads more dressage as I never thought I'd enjoy it so much

Continue doing lateral work in hand every so often to keep brain engaged and lots of love and cuddles!
