Well I eventually moved Lilly the palomino 2 year old that I brought last month tomy fields on Monday. She has been an angel but my 3 other girls want to kill her!

I left her by herself and put the 3 girls in a roped off area in the same field for the first night and all was fine. Came up the next morning and whenever Lilly got tooclose to the fence all 3 of them would lunge at her with their ears back. In the afternoon I introduced Cristle who seemed the most interested and after chasing Lilly nastily down the field she stopped and started grazing. Cristle and Lilly have now been together since Tuesday and are fine but if Lilly comes within 5 meters of Cristle she willchase her off quite violently and if Lilly gets too close to the fence then the other 2 will go for her too.

How long do you think it will take for them to sort them selfs out?
Am I doing the right thing by taking Cristle out of the herd and putting her with Lilly? Cristle is the youngest and most submissive of the 3 which is why i moved her but she completly ignores lilly enless she gets too close.

Do you thinkit would be worth taking themout for walks together to get them to buddy up?

Im sure it will all be fine in the end but I dont wan any of them getting hurt in the process.

Thanks

Everything seems to be fine at the moment.

Yesterday I put Cristle back in with the herd and brought Ellie the leader in with Lilly. She just ignored her and started grazing. Today I brought Cristle back in with Lilly and Ellie and all happily grazing although Lilly is keeping her distance. Nakeeta is still lunging at her across the fence but getting no reaction from the others.

Hi, sounds like you're doing things ok! especially taking it slowly.

I think you would be better putting the herd leader in with lilly first. That way the others can see that she has been accepted by their leader, and will accept her in their turn. It looks like Cristle is feeling she has to dominate lilly to make sure she stays top of their little herd; if the leader has already done this cristle and the other one should feel more secure.

Make sure resources aren't in danger - horses will feel less secure with another around if they have to 'fight' over water or feed; make sure there's two of everything, while it's settling down.

They'll sort it out, given time!

can you section them off and then introduce them one at a time? this is what I do with visiting mares although my girls are used to this seasonal group turning up. firstly I put the visiting mare in a seperate field with a shetland but in view of the others ( another very good reason to have them), then I introduce the herd leader alone without her mates into the new mares field , once she has excepted her then one by one I put them all in together , all are safe and all except this as a herd , good luck but dont risk a fight

It can take time, but I think you are going about it the right way and being sensible, get someone to lead one horse and you lead another out for a walk, away from the field, you could do it with each one.
