Posted - 16 Jun 2009 : 11:49:05 AM There is a thoroughbred filly at the same yard as Magic. The owner hasn't been near for ages and owes the YO a lot of money. On Saturday the filly started colicing and she has gone steadily down hill since then. The poor girl looks so depressed and the YO has put her out in a small paddock as she was injuring herself in the stable. The owner paid for one vet visit but either can't or won't pay for any more treatment. He won't even pay for the filly to be PTS. If I could afford it I would get the bloody vet to PTS myself. She is just standing with her head hanging and every morning I expect to see her passed away. No horse deserves this and Im going back this aft to give her a cuddle. It won't help her pain but at least she may feel for a while that she's not alone. |

Posted - 19 Jun 2009 : 8:51:40 PM I have to agree with Zenitha and Gossy, my first thought was that I would have just called the vet, and paid for it if I had to. A vet is able to make a decision to put any animal to sleep for humane reasons. Renee |

Posted - 17 Jun 2009 : 1:43:20 PM Agree with you, Gossy, the WHW (Formerly ILPH) should have been informed so that urgent action could be taken to spare the filly suffering and hopefully save her life. It would also have alerted them to the lack of care the owner has for his horses.

Posted - 17 Jun 2009 : 12:25:24 PM I think the RSPCA or ILPA should still get involved and prosecute this owner, the vets must have notes about the condition of the poor filly and with YO statement as to the length of time she suffered surely something can still be done, after all, there are still the other horses he has, what if the same happens to them, if he is reported now then surely the other horses will have an eye kept on them RIP little girl, no more suffering now |

Posted - 17 Jun 2009 : 09:56:22 AM I am totally with Zan and Gossy on this one. As it stands now this b....... owner has got away scot free. The RSPCA should have been called as soon as it was realised he wasn't going to do anything - the filly might have been saved and also he would have been on their records and perhaps this would prevent this awful thing happening again.
At least that way her life would have counted for something.
RIP beautiful girl Judith |

Posted - 17 Jun 2009 : 09:45:39 AM RIP poor young lady.
There are owners who fight tooth and nail to save their horse and owners who just don't give a toss and never will. That lovely horse, in the prime of her life. Who knows if she could have been saved, but surely she deserved the chance and not just abandoned for other people to deal with. horrible owner. |

Posted - 17 Jun 2009 : 07:53:35 AM This story has really upset me :( Poor poor little girl in soo much pain for far too long!
Its just a shame that it had gone on for so long, at least the YO did the right thing eventally and has had to foot the bill herself.
The owner needs f****** shooting!!!!!! Thank god your not local to me!!
Fun free little girl in heaven above never having to be in pain again! |

Posted - 16 Jun 2009 : 9:32:15 PM B****r the law - if I were the YO would have called the vet to hell with the consequences - can't bear to think of that poor filly suffering for all that time. Poor poor girl |

Posted - 16 Jun 2009 : 7:03:29 PM I agree with Gossy---this has been handled badly and unprofessionally. The contract with YO should have enabled her to call a vet and bill the owner directly for costs. Since this wasn't in place she should have called the RSPCA as soon as this filly was abandoned to her fate while critically ill. Then at least with their involvement something might have been done regarding his other horses, whereas as it is, he can carry on regardless, and prompt veterinary attention might have saved this poor filly's life. |

Posted - 16 Jun 2009 : 6:56:34 PM I got myself in such a state about this poor filly that I now have the most awful migraine, have taken some tablets and my head is throbbing, I still think he should be reported to stop any of his other poor horses suffering, its so sad if he did not want to pay for her I am sure he could find nice homes, I don't know how people like him can sleep at nightif someone had pm'd me with the details I would have phoned up from here and got somebody out as could only imagine what that poor horse was going through |

Posted - 16 Jun 2009 : 5:40:52 PM cant speak, so mad, i could kill,as soon as it became clear owner was not interested the ILPH or RSPCA should have been called, they would have took it on,then at least this poor filly might of had a chance at life with someone else that cared. |

Posted - 16 Jun 2009 : 4:56:04 PM RIP little one. At least now she is not suffering. People like her owner drive me nuts. They should be banned from keeping animals completely. Disgusts me! |

Posted - 16 Jun 2009 : 4:47:26 PM Have just returned from the yard and the filly is now at peace. After constant phone calls to the owner our YO finally got his permission to put the filly out of her misery. She paid for it herself. At least the poor girl is no longer suffering. It makes me angry that this excuse for a man has one other horse with us and several more at different yards. He owes all the YO's money and doesn't give a t*** about them! |

Posted - 16 Jun 2009 : 4:30:55 PM As others have said the YO should have an agreement where they can call a vet when a horse is ill. We had a situation on saturday with a horse falling into a river and there was no way of getting him out without help. I as a manager of the yard immediatly called the fire brigade and vet straight away with no care for who would pay the bill. The animals welfare was my first priority. I would do the same in any emergency situation and colic past a certain point would be an emergency. If your YO does not feel that she can do this she should phone RSPCA or ILPH as others have said. The owner of this filly should be done for cruelty and stopped from having animals if they are not willing to pay to help the poor animal.
I really hope this poor filly does not have to suffer any longer than need be. Lets hope something is done ASAP. I would happily report anyone who i felt was treating an animal badly or making it suffer even a best friend. |

Posted - 16 Jun 2009 : 3:00:58 PM hopefully the rspca will take the matter as urgency and visit same day! If the mare is still alive! Must be so hard for you slave to magic but this call might be the last loving act you could do for the filly. Just fingers crossed she can be helped |

Posted - 16 Jun 2009 : 2:19:28 PM As a livery yard owner myself, I have a written contract which states that if a horse is injured or in distress I can call the vet out and the owner of the horse will be billed direct from the vets. All of my clients are with the same practice and I just phone up give the horses name and the bill goes to them.
This mare needs assistance asap either from the vets or the RSPCA as already stated by just about everyone who has responded on here. |

Posted - 16 Jun 2009 : 2:06:27 PM Sorry but when we had a yard as the owners we would take it upon ourselves to bring the vet if a horse was injured or suffering and we paid the vet bill direct and then billed the owner and it was also written in the livery agreement that we would do such if needed if we could not get hold of the owners. If a horse is in need of veterinary assistance and was suffering I think that is enough legally to warrant calling the vet as you also have the back up of the visiting vet. The RSPCA should have been called immediately, this is terrible how long has this poor horse been suffering for?? however long it is, it is a second too long in my book. surely to see it in pain is enough to do Something!!!!!!!!!if you won't call the vet or RSPCA send me the details and I will do it from here in France PLEASE!!!!!!!!! |

Posted - 16 Jun 2009 : 2:00:54 PM As a veterinary nurse I would contact a vet- probably whoever came out to her once. Having seen the filly they have a "duty of care" to stop the her suffering even if there is no money available at the time- they can always press for costs from the owner later. Having called the vet once, the owners have accpeted the filly needs care and so are responsible and the vet could then go to court for costs later if necessary.
Either the owner or yard owner needs this sorting immediately. Keep us informed of any progress!! |

Posted - 16 Jun 2009 : 1:42:23 PM Hi Magic, ring the RSPCA/ILPH right away, its not right that people leave their animals to other people to deal with,if she goes down and can't get up it still takes days for her to die, it will be very painful for her, so sorry you are stuck with this,
