The UK's biggest and best Arabian race meeting. With runners from UAE, Qatar, Europe, Iraq and of course the UK.
Preview:-
The Emirates Airline Premier Handicap Stakes 0-75 over 7 Furlongs: Always a very hard race to call and the last 3 winners of this race have all been well handicapped maidens, but this race is always run at a furious pace and the winners are frequently un-fancied based on form. The selection this year is the Royal Cavalry of Oman’s maiden handicapper Razen, he has run some excellent races in defeat including when second to Suhaim over 6 furlongs and recently when chasing home Miswadah over 7 furlongs at Herford. PLACE CLAIMS – Miswadah was 3rd in this race in 2009, but she has been a revelation this term winning at Fakenham over 8f and then following up at Hereford 7f, she has to defy top weight here. Sabden is another who has come back to form this season, forget her last run over 2 miles, she has won twice this term over 7f at Wolverhampton and a mile at Hereford. Jamaahir won this race last year and came right back to form at Wolverhampton when winning over 6 furlongs (beating WFA Leopard).
The Meydan International Stakes (Conditions) over 1 Mile 2 Furlongs: The selection is Al Shahania Farms Aziz, he was 2nd in the Group 1 UK Derby last year and found a mile a touch too sharp when 5th behind No Risk Al Maury in a Group 2 at Newmarket, he’s been in good form in Qatar coming second to Rasheeqah in the Qatar International Derby over this trip in December and then third to Raqiyah in the Group 1 International Trophy over a mile. PLACE CLAIMS – Al Janoob has won 3 times in the UK, the latest being when easily winning at Wolverhampton over this trip (beating Genuinely At Risk and Al Seif). Genuinely At Risk won over a mile last season and was consistently placed, he looked impressive coming third to Asraa Min Albarq in the Group 2 Hawthorn International Stakes over this trip. Al Seif has some excellent form in France and was 4th to Asraa Min Albarq at Newbury and again to No Risk Al Maury at Newmarket over a mile, this looks like an easier opportunity.
The Al Hai Group Zaabeel Group 1 International Stakes over 6 Furlongs: This race is the Arabian sprint championships. There are no obvious Group level sprinters in the field this year, so the tentative selection is the impeccably bred Emmamer (dam won UK Derby and sire has been responsible for 3 of the winner of this race). He has been running well in France this term particularly when winning the Djouras Tu over 7 furlongs in March and when 2nd to Cambrydge in the Group 3 Prix Damas, he will take all the beating. PLACE CLAIMS – El Adjban won twice last season over a mile and 7 furlongs, and looked right back to his best with a scorching win over this trip at Kempton Park. Burning Fancy was a top class sprinter in the US, she won impressively at Lingfield Park in a Group 3 5 furlong event and will be fighting out the finish. Mutafani always runs well here and was 2nd in 2008 and came third last year, he last won in February last year when winning the Al Ruwais Group 3 over 5 furlongs.
The Emirates NBD Hatta Group 1 International Stakes over 1 Mile 2 Furlongs : The mares championship race and several leading hopes lined up. The selection is Umm Qarn Farms amazing mare Raqiyah who won last years Group 1 UK Derby over this trip. In great heart this season she won the Group 1 Qatar International Trophy and HH Heir Apparent Trophy in Qatar in March and in June she won the Group 1 President of UAE Cup Coupe du Europe at Saint Cloud. PLACE CLAIMS- Laqataat is very nice mare and won her maiden well last term before coming 2nd in the mile race here and then winning comfortably at Hereford 7f and Stratford 10f, she won impressively on her reappearance at Hereford over 9f and looks capable of stepping up to this grade. Areej won the Yousef Al Romaihi Cup in Qatar in January and then came 2nd to Raqiyah in the Qatar Int Trophy before impressing on her UK debut when an eye catching 3rd to No Risk Al Maury over a mile at Newmarket in a Group 2 event. While the Royal Cavalry of Oman’s Kerbelle Lotoise won well at Fakenham over 7 furlongs and has some good in form in France prior to racing in the UK.
The Shadwell Dubai Group 1 International Stakes over 1 Mile 2 Furlongs: A strong and competitive renewal of this race, the championship race of the UK season. The selections is last years winner Jaafer who has been in great form in Qatar over the winter, winning the Group 1 Emir’s Sword over 1 mile 4 furlongs; and was a battling on 2nd to No Risk Al Maury at Newmarket last week over an inadequate mile and won this race impressively last year and is taken to land a repeat victory. PLACE CLAIMS- No Risk Al Maury has won this race twice in the past and has been on winning form in Meydan during the winter, he looked right back to his best when winning the Group 2 Abu Dhabi Stakes at Newmarket last week. Theoretically won the American Derby and has run some great races in defeat in Europe but got off the mark in May in the President of the UAE Cup in Ireland beating Kasih and is in great form. Asraa Min Albarq has been running some good races in defeat in Qatar this winter, but looked impressive when winning the Group 2 Hawthorn Hill Stakes over course and distance in June.
The Emirates Equestrian Federation Group 2 International Stakes (3 yrs only) over 7 Furlongs: A quality field of juveniles from UK, Europe and Qatar and several in with strong chances. The selection is Tabarak who looked very impressive when winning the Group 1 Coupe de France for juveniles at Chantilly beating Areem (Flyppin Rich well beaten) and should take this race. PLACE CLAIMS – Robert Litt’s undefeated Sahlambo has an outstanding chance, a winner twice at Toulouse over 7 and 8 furlongs, looks capable of landing this event to make it a hatrick. Damein De Watrigant has won this race several times in the past and Mestor looks the best of his runners, a winner of the Prix Zulma in March over 6f he was then 3rd to Areem over 8 furlongs and this trip looks spot on.
The Jebel Ali Racecourse Premier Handicap Stakes 0-115 over 1 Mile 5 Furlongs: Known on the circuit as the stayers handicapped and this race has been won for the last four running’s by Champion trainer Gill Duffield and owner HH Sheikh Hamdan. The selection this year is Moshahed who has always been a grand stayer and gets a handy pull from top weight, he won over 12 furlongs last season and was a decent second to stablemate Takaamul in this race last year, had a good pipe opener at Hereford when 3rd to Laqataat over an inadequate 9 furlongs. PLACE CLAIMS- Stablemate Mahra has been a revelation this season and has really found her form, she won impressively over 12 furlongs at Taunton and then followed in fine style at Hereford beating Majaales 12 lengths. Kalikeauba won a Group 3 in France back in 2009 and won over this trip at Market Rasen last season and should go close. Altesse Kossack proves she stays well when winning over this trip at Wolverhampton in a lower grade, she may sneak a place off a low weight.
The Jumeirah Group Handicap Stakes 0-90 over 1 Mile: This probably the most competitive handicap of the meeting with a particularly strong group of improving youngsters in this band level, and again Gill Duffield and HH Sheikh Hamdan have taken this race several times in the last four years. The selection is Laafet who looked good when 3rd to Antar Vege at Wolverhampton over 9 furlongs (who’s won again since as has the 2nd), he then scored at Fakenham he beat subsequent maiden winner Marwah; so the form looks solid and he gets 5 lb pull from top weight. PLACE CLAIMS- Ambrose annihilated the field in the Wathba Stud Breeders Cup over course and distance in June and will be dangerous if reproducing that form. Basela won an above average maiden over 7 furlongs at Wolverhampton where she beat smart recruit Sandababa. Suhaim and Magazhi have both been running well this season from the in form Deutrom yard, Suhaim won over 6f and was 2nd to Manan here over 10 furlongs while Magazhi won Athbah Stud final last season and has been consistently placed at this level.

Just to put the record straight I'm only a co-owner of Syrah Gris with Adam Newey, although after his performance I'm wishing I was the sole owner

Posted - 26 Jul 2011 : 11:43:34 PM Dubai International Arabian Festival by Paul Simmons
Newbury Sunday 17th July
Dubai Day International Race-supporters were this year treated to a traditional English summer down pour, but the 12,000 people in attendance refused to have their racing spirit dampened and were treat to some amazing top class Arabian racing. Once again the Dubai Day International festival boasted some of the finest Arabian race horses in the world in the Group races as well as some top class competitive handicaps for domestic runners. HH Sheikh Hamdan landed 3 winners on the day unveiling some potential superstars with conditions winner Aktar Lotois and Group 2 juvenile winner Usimir De Montegut, as well as the Gill Duffield trained hot pot Eustral winning the stayers handicap. Qatar based Julian Smart landed two Group 1 victories for HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani (Al Shahania Stud) with Group 1 Zaabeel winner Aziz and Group 1 Dubai Stakes victor Asraa Min Albarq causing an upset when beating world class performers No Risk Al Maury and Jaafer. While French trainer Robert Litt took the Group 1 mares race with Sanagham, Monsieur Temer the juvenile with Usimir De Montegut and Francios Rohaut landed the conditions with Aktar Lotois. The opening handicap was won after a thrilling finish between Razan and Syras Gris, with Syrah Gris repaying trainer Adam Newey’s faith with victory; and Welsh based trainer Delyth Thomas took the closing handicap with tough as teak handicapper Noble Athlete. Another phenomenal days racing with some superb finishes, and further evidence to the thoroughbred fraternity that Arab racing is alive, well and booming, proved by the strong fields from UK, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Qatar and Saudi Arabia and an eye watering £129,000 worth of prize money on offer.
The Emirates Airline Premier Handicap 0-75 Stakes over 7 Furlongs: A superb training performance here by Adam Newey with Almost All Partnership's Syrah Gris (Khotoubia x Akara De Syrah), who lost his maiden tag here in fine style under a well judged and energetic ride from Frankie McDonald. There was some serious market support for the winner who was backed down from 14/1 to 6/1 co fav and although he won he gave his backers a few tense moments as he battled with Razen for victory in the final furlong with Frankie McDonald just getting Syrah Gris home by a head from the Royston French ridden Razen (owned by the Royal Cavalry of Oman). As usual the field broke smartly from the stalls with top weight Miswadah blazing a trail with Razen stalking in behind, at the two furlong marker French went for home on Razen with Miswadah, Syrah Gris, Senor Dublcheck and Jaamahir all chasing in behind, but as they entered the final furlong Syrah Gris and Razen went to head to head for a spectacular start to the meeting and Syrah Gris just getting up by a head from Razen. Speaking afterwards deligthed winning trainer Adam Newey said "We were always targeting him at this race and deliberately kept him fresh for today, and pleased all the time, effort and hard work paid off on the day. I am also pleased for his owner Linda Cross who has been very patient". Linda Cross won this race back in 2006 with Almost All and was thrilled to have another winner at this valuable meeting "I always liked this horse and we always felt he had a decent race in him, and Adam has done a great job to get him to win today on only his second start of the season". Razen (Saut Du Loup x Hadhoodh) ran a very brave race in defeat and was unlucky not to get home, the rain softened ground perhaps working against him, he has been second 3 times this season and always goes down fighting and lead the charge to the line here but once again was denied the taste of victory, he should get his head in front soon. Senor Dublcheck (Bengali D'Albret x Mais (Mamluk) ran a superb race 2 1/2 lengths back in third for trainer David Paton, always handy and travelling well he chased the first two hard inside the final furlong and although never a threat he was well clear of the field and this effort represents his best race to date in this grade and there is clearly more to come from this tough handicapper. HH Sheikh Hamdan's colt Barik D'Albret (Al Sakbe x Malika D'Albret) was always in the rear but to his credit ploughed on past beaten horses in the final furlong to claim fourth ahead of a one paced Awraaq, he will be interesting when upped in trip.
The Private Banking From Emirates NBD International (Conditions) Stakes over 1 Mile 2 Furlongs: An extremely impressive victory here for HH Sheikh Hamdan's smart entire Aktar Lotois (Akbar x Larissa Lotois), the 9/4 favourite was give a superb confident ride from French jockey Francios -Xavier Bertras to land a scorching seven length victory for French trainer Monsieur Rohaut. The pace was set in the early stages by Vizir De Cedres with Aktar Lotois and Tidarbret all prominent, as they hit the 3 furlong marker Tidarbret set sail for home under a determined Steve Harrison with Aktar Lotois travelling ominiously well in behind with Mu'Azzaz, but as they entered the final two furlongs Bertras made smooth headway with Aktar Lotois and this powerful athlete galloped easily clear inside the final furlong to record an emphatic victory. Last years winner Mu'Azzaz (Amer x Massamarie) stayed on one paced inside the final to take second, he travelled well but once again found little under pressure and doesn't look to be the most genuine performer. Tidarbret (Bengali D'Albret x Iktidar (Djelfor)) ran another great race here ( he was 2nd in this race last year), he travelled well and ran on strongly in the closing stages and this effort represents a clear sign of a return to form and he is one to watch next time out now he is back on song.
The Al Hai Group Zaabeel International Stakes (Group 1) over 6 Furlongs: This race looked wide open on paper but in the end it was won in convincing style by the Julian Smart trained Aziz (Amer x Aziza D'Aroco), a smart performer last term he was 2nd in the Group 1 Derby, and clearly versatile he proved that this step back in trip was of no inconvenience and showed the field a clean pair of heels to unleash a devastating turn of foot inside the final to win by four lengths going away for owner/breeder Qatar based HH Sheikh Mohammend Bin Khalifa Al Thani (Al Shahania Farm). 5/4 favourite Aziz made the running from the start under a masterful ride from Alan Munro, he quickly asserted his authority in the final two furlongs with Mutafani, El Adjban, Emmamer and Zayin Barakaldo all mounting a challenge, but he never looked in danger and sprinted jome for an impressive victory. Speaking afterwards winning trainer Julian Smart said "He has always been an extremely classy racehorse and shows plenty of raw speed at home, and we hoped his class and talent would give him the edge today, and he has won that impressively." The Royal Cavalry of Oman's Mutafani (Amer x Cheikha) was placed in this race for the third time (2nd in 2008 and 3rd last year), he was always in contention and galloped into 2nd inside the final 2 furlongs and although always being held by the winner he was well clear of the field and remains a smart sprinter and a big danger for the Group 3 sprint at Bath in August. Back in third was a superb performance for the Lesley Hartley owned and bred El Adjban (Makzan x Shunah (Shomran)), he was held up in the early stages and made good headway to go third inside the final 2 furlongs and maintained his pace and position in spite of the relentless challenge in behind from Emmamer (Amer x Emma Du Cayrou); this is another fine effort from this talented homebred and he has a good chance of victory at Bath too based on this performance. His delighted owner/breeder Lesley Hartley (who trained his dam Shunah to win a Group 3 sprint in the 1990's) said "I am over the moon with his run, he was so impressive at Kempton when winning the Premier handicap and to come 3rd in a Group 1 on Dubai Day is a dream come true, I am extremely proud of him."
The Shadwell Farm Hatta International Stakes (Mares Only) Group 1 over 1 Mile 2 Furlongs: Areej was sent off 4/6 favourite but the bookies could breath a sigh of relief as smart French owned/trained and bred mare Sanagham denied Areej her first Group 1 victory, and in doing so landed the biggest win of her career for trainer Robert Litt. The field broke smartly with smart handicapper Katwalk setting a decent gallop with Mi Temps De Piboul settled in behind with Areej, Laqataat and Burning Fancy all in contention and Sanagham settled at the rear of the field. As they entered the final two furlongs Alan Munro set sail for home on Areej and she started to pull clear of the field with Sanagham staying on well in her slip stream, but as they entered the final furlong Philippe Sogorb on Sanagham swept into the lead and although Areej battled back it was Sanagham (Al Sakbe x Ennagham) who had the edge and she held on by half a length to land victory for French owner/breeder Madame Litt and trainer Robert Litt. Areej (Amer x Akie Croix Noir) was gallant in defeat, she rallied hard in the final furlong but seemed to find the good to soft ground a touch too testing, but she looks well up to winning at this level on a faster surface. Burning Fancy (Burning Sand x Sayquins and Lace) ran a brilliant race for the Athbah Stud, the talented Grade 1 sprinter from America had won a Group 3 sprint last year in the UK and many thought she wouldn’t stay the trip, but she is clearly versatile and stayed every yard, she threw down a big challenge two furlongs out and fought on well to hold onto third ahead of a staying on Laqataat (Bengali D’Albret x Qosheeyya). The latter ran a brave race on her Group level debut and has done all her winning on good/firm ground and like Areej perhaps didn’t handle the soft going.
The Shadwell Dubai International Stakes (Group 1) over 1 Mile 2 Furlongs: A fascinating clash between two of the best Arabian race horses in the world, former dual Dubai winner No Risk Al Maury and last years winner and Kahayala Classic winner Jaafer. However, to the bookies delight it was a surprise win as pace maker and stable second string Asraa Min Albarq firmly established himself as a serious group horse in his own right, with a power packed performance to gain his first Group 1 victory in Europe under a superb bold ride from Tadg O’Shea. Asraa Min Albarq recorded a pillar to post victory in this valuable renewal, with the rest of the field settled in behind O’Shea stole a march on the field as they entered the home straight and although Jaafer and No Risk Al Maury both mounted a serious challenge inside the final two furlongs, but Asraa Min Albarq (Amer x Akie Croix Noir) dug deep and had too much pace and held on by just under two lengths for an impressive victory for owner/breeder HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani (Al Shahania Stud) and trainer Julian Smart. Speaking after the race Smart said “He has always been a good performer and his Group 2 win here in June was impressive, he has top class form but always seems to find one too good, but he loved the ground here and his stamina kicked in and helped him outstay the others.” No Risk Al Maury (Kesberoy x Nectarine Al Maury) lost nothing in defeat back in second, many thought he would struggle handle the soft going, but this amazing race horse has the heart of a lion and he gave his all in the final furlong; and although he couldn’t catch the winner he did win his battle for second and remains a phenomenal performer at 9 yrs of age and is a credit to his trainer Gill Duffield. Jaafer (Amer x Madjela) was half a length back in third, he travelled well and came with his challenge inside the final two furlongs and had a tough fight in the final furlong for second and just conceded the reserve slot to No Risk in the final few strides, but was in turn clear of the Belgium raider Omni DA (Ircalan DA x Haliyana El Kendal).
The Emirates Equestrian Federation International Stakes (3 yrs old ) Group 2 Over 7 Furlongs: Unbeaten French filly Sahlambo was sent off the 5/4 fav but in the end she could only manage 4th after pulling very hard in the early stages, and it was HH Sheikh Hamdan’s smart juvenile colt Usimir De Montegut who came out on top under another master class ride from Richard Hills for French trainer Monsieur Lemer. The field set off at a sedate gallop with the young runners reluctant to make the running and in the end Mestor went to the head of the field with Mkeefa, Sahlambo and Aziz Al Shahania travelling well in behind. As they entered the final two furlongs Mestor quickened the pace but Hills was cruising in behind on Usimir De Montegut, and as they hit the final furlong Usimir De Montegut and Mestor were nip and tuck all the way to the line with HH Sheikh Hamdan’s smart colt Usimir De Montegut (Tidjani x Indiana De Sol) getting up on the line by a head. Mestor (Mahabb x Mendra) ran brave race back in second for the Royal Cavalry of Oman, he made a bold bid for victory and was unluckly to lose in the shadow of the post; but he remains a smart prospect and is one to watch next year. While the in form Julian Smart yard unleashed a potential superstar with Aziz Al Shahania (Prince D’Orient x Baldora De Brugere) making a dazzling racecourse debut, he was always in the front 3 and when the first two kicked for home he chased them all the way to the line and should lose his maiden tag soon. Sahlambo (Munjiz x CR Samborsta) lost all chance of victory in the early stages of the race when pulling too hard, and the result may have been very different if she had been allowed to make the running.
The Jebel Ali Racecourse Premier Handicap Stakes 0-115 over 1 Mile 5 Furlongs: Kalikeauba made a brave attempt at recording a start to finish victory for the Athbah Stud, he jumped well from the stalls and was soon leading the field at a good working gallop and looked to have the race at his mercy, but Eustral and his stablemate Moshahed were both travelling well in behind. As the entered the final two furlongs Moshahed went to the head of affairs but Eustral was travelling with consummate ease under a confident ride from Richard Hills, and as they entered the final furlong 3/1 favourite Eustral (Al Sakbe x Danse Avec L’Eau) easily galloped clear of the field and outstayed the field in fine style to record a four length victory for owner HH Sheikh Hamdan (his third win of the meeting) and trainer Gill Duffield. Moshahed (Chndaka x Nirva De Cardonne) was 2nd for the second year in a row and had to settle for the minor placing behind his impressive stablemate, he stayed on well in the straight and kept up to this work to hold onto second. Kalikeauba (Darike x Rilkela) ran a brave race 2 lengths back in third, and battled on hard in the final furlong to hold onto third from a staying on Mahra (Bengali D’Albret x Sophie Du Loup).
The Derrinstown Stud Handicap Stakes 0-90 over 1 Mile: Delyth Thomas won the opening handicap last season and this year she finished the meeting with an all out victory from her prolific winner Noble Athlete (Dorwan Du Cayrou x Noble Dame), who had won two weeks earlier at Wolverhampton (where Delyth had landed a treble). Talented young jockey Matthew Stanley (a name to remember) won the novice rider race on Athlete weeks before, and once again here he showed courage and judgement to make all in the rain softened ground and galloped the field into submission to score a resounding victory for owner/trainer Delyth Thomas. He lead on the far rail throughout and when Maghazi threw down the gauntlet inside the final furlong this gallant handicap dug deep and found more under an energetic ride from Stanley to win by just under a length. Commenting after the race his delighted trainer Delyth Thomas said “I thought he would run after his last win, but this was a hot handicap and I didn’t think he would win, but he is such a tough horse and Matthew rode a superb race from the front.” Maghazi (Chndaka x Nirva De Cardonne) has run some great races in defeat this season, he was always travelling well behind the winner and made a bold bid inside the final furlong but couldn’t get past the winner, he remains a class act at this level. Louran (Doran x Mangaline Du Loup) was making her seasonal debut and did well to land 3rd in such a competitive race and under top weight, she was held up with run and came with her effort inside the final two furlongs but couldn’t reach the front pair, but she was easily clear of a one paced Juhood (Al Sakbe x Tamani).
