Posted - 21 May 2015 : 2:33:08 PM Got back from the Golden Horseshoe last night - what an experience! I now know that if we do it again (if they run it again), it is not a good idea to corral your horse and camp in a small cheap tent from Argos! High winds, pouring rain and hail, with the odd burst of sunshine. I was delayed getting home from offshore, so flew down from Aberdeen Friday morning, to be greeted by my husband, about 45 minutes at home then loaded up the horses (luckily my sister and Mother had loaded up all my gear for me) and then set out on what turned out to be a nightmare journey from Kent to Exmoor. Finally set up corrals and tents in the dark. Lily and I were entered for the 40km Open class on Sunday, since due to work we'd only managed one pleasure ride so far this season, so a bit of a baptism of fire - hadn't ridden for 3 weeks, and my sister had been keeping Lily going in my absence by lunging her. Sunday dawned and we had the best of the weather and the conditions. I rode with my sister who was doing the 3 day 120km, and it was brilliant, tough going, some humungous hills, a river crossing nearly up to Lily's belly ( a first for her), and it was hardly ideal terrain for her since she prefers smooth going. She was an absolute star, we kept to a steady speed and we got silver, so proud of her, as it was hardly ideal preparation. My sister continued for a further 2 days, through extremely testing conditions and also achieved silver on her tough little Arab Red House Shamil. Then had to pack all the sodden gear up for the long trek home. Now washing everything ready for Berkshire Downs on Sunday where I will be riding with my cousin and the Yellow Pony (and camping again ). I am so very proud of my girl. Here is a link to a photo of Trilby and I on the course (although Lily has been given a different name! Should be Zahkira) on the Golden Horseshoe Gallery.
Must admit we always B&B at horseshoe, as Exmoor can be unpredictable.
Then we stupidly camped at the Red Dragon last year!!!
