Hi, I am after some advice - I am starting endurance with my 5 year old this year. So far she is coping very well barefoot and I intend to keep her that way, but also order some boots as the distances get longer.

Anyway, my question is this - when we get vetted pre ride how does the farrier inspection work when the horse is barefoot? Will they decide if she has enough growth/good shape to start the ride? Or should she be in boots?

Any advice gratefully received!

For the farrier they're only checking that shoes won't fall off. You can vet in boots as they don't make people take shoes off ;)

You can do any mixture you want. Last year at Quantocks 64k we vetted pre ride bare, rode first 40k bare. Mid ride vetting in boots and booted for second 24k loop and booted for final vetting.

We're Renegade fans as gloves didn't seem to have enough breakover for Cinny. Plus the whole rubber mallet thing with gloves seem a faff.

Yes, I have read quite a lot about the easyboot gloves and renegades on the phoenix forum, etc

I think I will probably end up trying the easyboots

Thanks again for the advice x

Yes you could if you wanted or you could, for example, pop them on part way round if you felt that she needed them, it's really completely up to you.

There's a lot online about boots if you have a look round, if you're looking to go on to longer distances later then the popular boots that have been proven at higher levels (mostly in America) are easyboot gloves and renegades.

Aah, thanks for that advice. That sounds good that there is such flexibility with/out boots. Really means that I can play it by ear and see how she is at the time.

So technically you could pre vet without, then do the ride and if you felt they were a touch footsore then pop boots on for the post ride vetting?

Now, to do more boot research! But that is a whole new topic!!

We compete in boots, we weren't sure of the rules about presenting to the farrier/vet ourselves so asked on the egb forum. Basically there aren't any rules, it's up to you, you can present booted and ride booted, present barefoot and ride booted, present booted and ride barefoot, or present barefoot and ride barefoot. We compete booted and we decided to always present booted simply because it's easier time wise, though there have also been a couple of rocky trot up areas that we couldn't have done without boots. Our experience is that most farriers take one look, see it doesn't have shoes on and just tick the box on the sheet. We have had one or two check the fit and tread, but literally one or two and we've done quite a few rides with them now. The farrier can prevent people starting if the shoes aren't suitable, but as far as we're aware they couldn't prevent you starting barefoot whatever their opinion of your horses feet, it would be for the vet to vet you out if the horse was lame/foot sore. She definitely doesn't need to be in boots if she doesn't need them, quite a few riders compete barefoot at lower distances and there are a few who compete advanced barefoot as well, including cinnypony on here. Good luck!
