Posted - 06 Feb 2013 : 6:10:20 PM Is there such a thing for endurance?? I really need some help.
My lad has done endurance in the past, and I have done the odd pleasure ride, not on him though, but after suffering a near fatal accident two years a go Zar can no longer jump or show, and to be honest my heart is no longer in the show ring with out him. Endurance has for a long time been on my list of things I want to do, but until now has been sidelined. Zar is now 100% sound. I have been doing some work on fittening and conditioning his tendons and muscles etc with 2hour hacks at walk 3 -4 times a week and 20 mins of lunge work at trot a week. Weather conditions permitting. But as for everything else I really need some help. Lol
Also is there a good book or two that anyone can recommend to a complete novice endurance wannabe. |

Posted - 08 Mar 2013 : 05:51:33 AM Thanks emma b. I did look at that but its too close to the adr ride at north stow that I want to do. Hopefully doing the middlewick at the end of the month. As long as my trailer floor has been done by then. ;-) So far our training is coming along great guns. Zar is quite happy to cover between 12 and 16km with a fair bit of trot and the odd canter. Our average time is around 9kph so just scraping in for a novice ride. Hardly working up a sweat. And his recovery times are good. Happy to be 'sloshed'. Can do gates. But doesnt.like racing squirells. Long story. Lol. |

Posted - 26 Feb 2013 : 05:41:30 AM Well so far the training is going well. Although due to the ground conditions (quite stoney paths) our way and because of it having been a wet winter and the fact that Zar lives out 24/7, I have had to have some back shoes put on him. We had managed to wear 4 weeks of growth away in 2 weeks. The poor lad had nearly no bars left on his feet. So under advise of my very trusted farrier that has known Zar since.before his injury we shod him. He is now walking out a lot faster and happier. I have also lowered our distances slightly from 10km 3 times a week at walk only, to 7 k to include some trot work. We have been working on our obstacles, gates, water etc. And Sunday we came across a combine harvester digging swedes and a succsesion of tractors and trailers. He was a saint. Stood patiently until it was safe to pass them all, and went by carefully without a fuss. He did get a little excited when we saw some other riders in the distance. Nothing bad. He was just very interested to see them and started marching out to try and catch them up, so this is something I now know needs more work, as I want him to ignore that and listen to me. There is a pleasure ride nearish me coming up in a few weeks with some very short distances (3, 5 and 8 miles) which he will be able to cope with. So I think we will do that one as a training ride for him. And see if I can get him to settle. So far so good. He is staying sound. His muscle is coming back. The topline on his neck and back has vastly improved although still needs more work, and best of al, Zar seems a lot more content with life. |

Posted - 14 Feb 2013 : 11:25:17 AM Very positive! I especially think its a good idea to get someone to train with. I have two endurance riders nearby who I meet to ride with and one lady who boxes over to me to ride out at a proper pace on hills - so nice not having to wait all the time like I do for my non endurance friends (although companys always nice!) |

Posted - 14 Feb 2013 : 05:50:23 AM Well its all systems go. I have found two pleasure rides to do near to me. One near the end of april. And another in june. Both about 10 miles. I have just ordered a new saddle, Zar needed one anyway as his current saddle doesnt fit at all. And we are out riding 5 days a week (at walk for about 7-8 km a time) even in the snow the other day. With one day a week lunging in the pessoa at trot on the lowest setting. I am determined to get this right for him. Its only been 3 weeks and already his whole attitude has changed. He seems so much happier to be working again. I hadnt realised just how depressed he was being a lawn mower. His body shape has already started to change too. I have also been chatting to a nice lady quite near to me who is currently getting her horse fit for endurance to start at novice level this year too. So hopefully we will meet upsoon. And I have pencilled in our first novice graded ride for mid july. On my birthday. |

Posted - 07 Feb 2013 : 11:28:11 AM I too would thoroughly recommend Marcy Pavord's Endurance Start to Finish, published by J.A. Allen ISBN 0.85131.648.4. Before you worry about a trainer, take him to some pleasure rides to see how you get on. EGB Iceni group run several pleasure and training rides mostly venues in and around Thetford Forest. You might also consider Anglian Distance Riders who, as well as being involved in some of the Iceni EGB rides, also organise pleasure and training rides throughout the year in Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex, which is where most of our members are based. Have a look on the ADR website for details. Whereabouts in Essex are you? |

Posted - 06 Feb 2013 : 6:30:04 PM If hes competed before you can look up his results on the EGB website - you'll need the name he was registered in or his rider's name. 'Try before you buy' is a very good idea. Hope you have fun with him! |

Posted - 06 Feb 2013 : 6:26:07 PM Hi thanks arachnid. I was just about to contact iceni gb to see if they could help. I havent registered with EGB yet. I am holding off for a little while until I am a million percent sure that Zar is still 'up for it' etc. And I have gained some more knowledge practise etc. I will probably join iceni as an associate member to start off. And do some pleasure rides. I see also that EGB are doind a try before you buy at some rides too. All being well though I may join in july this year on a half year. Am I right in thinking though that there should be a record of him somewhere as he was previously registered with them? |

Posted - 06 Feb 2013 : 6:16:17 PM Have you tried asking your local EGB group? They might be able to find you a local rider to train with. Also there is a 'buddies board' on the EGB website which you might like to try. I think the local group is Iceni up there but someone else might know better. There are several endurance coaches out there - they are listed in this year's handbook. Have you already registered you and Zar with EGB?
I seem to asked you more questions! |
