Posted - 11 Feb 2013 : 2:14:32 PM Hi All,
i am a newbie to AL and the showing world.
i am after a bit of advice / tips for this coming season. My purebred boy will be 3 in May so i want to get him out and experience the world of showing. I have had him since June and have spent most of this time bonding. We have just about mastered standing square which has taken a few months. When practising our in hand, he has a tendency to pull faces and try and bite me. I can see this being a bit of an issue when in the ring.
Has any body else had this problem and how did you kerb it?
Many thanks

Posted - 17 Feb 2013 : 8:59:39 PM There are AHS group shows, if your in the midlands would you be North? Sorry I am from the south east so have no idea which one would be near you, some of the arab group shows are listed on the events pages on here, or go on the arab horse society website they will have a list of them all, failing,I sometimes go to local shows just for the experience as they tend to be more low key and gives young horses a chance to get used to showing, good luck will look out for your progress. |

Posted - 12 Feb 2013 : 9:10:36 PM Thanks for the welcome He's a gelding but a very cheeky one We have just introduced clicker training and that seems to be working well. Might have a play at the weekend with and without treat and see what works for him. Someone has also suggested sweets in a small tin so it rattles, also going to try that!. Really looking forward to our first season together!
Are there any shows you can recommend? Want to try and get to a fee of the Arab ones in the midlands to get an idea of how we're supposed to look lol sounds silly but I don't want to be the one to let him down! |

Posted - 12 Feb 2013 : 10:15:43 AM Hi and welcome, funny you should say that as my gelding does it sometimes, he never used to when he was a baby, now his a grumpy 8 year old he feels the need, he only does it when we are running though so I tend to stay quite a way from him lol
Is your horse a colt or gelding? This can be colty behaviour.
Maybe carry some treats with you might encourage him to look a bit happier although might encourage him to bite more, you might find as he gets older he will grow out of it. |
