Hi everyone,
Im new to this forum, and new to the showing world, wondered if anyone had any advice on in hand showing my purebred, where to go etc.
Ive got my eye on HOCON at Towerlands as it is so close for me, does anyone know when the schedule will be available?
Is it a tough show etc?
Look forward to hearing from you, i dont have any friends in the horsey world that are "arab mad" like me so will be nice to chat to you all.

Thanks for your kind words Nicky. I did feel very out of my depth at HOCON. The EYFU was great - I was amazed how well Zar and Eba coped with big wheels, popcorn stalls, balloons, general fairground noise, and shire horses with brasses. I did enjoy that. I am not sure I am set up for showing and now Eba is almost back under saddle, I am wondering whether to concentrate on dressage and lite endurance more. She was sooooo good tonight. She was a bit on her toes, and I haven't ridden her for a week, and before last week, when I sat on her a couple of times, she hasn't been ridden since November. So, I thought I would lunge her. No side reins, in the big school, with the hay being quad biked round the fields. She went beautifully, overtracking by about 2-3 hooves worth, and working low and round. Now that she has lost a bit of weight, I am very pleased with her. She will never be a seahorse arab, as I think the Babson makes her a bit drier, but she is lovelly, and such a sweetie.
Hope Zar is doing well.

Hi Josiereanne. Welcome to AL from another arab mad Essex girl.
I'm not far from you either.
BB- I think you and Eba did very well at HOCON last year, despite feeling out of your depth. It can be very duanting there, its a big place, and very busy.
The EYFU was good fun though, wasn't it! I do hope they do the arab classes again this year. Not that I will be entering, but if anyone wants a groom???? |

Brook Farm is a nice place they have ridden Bacs qualifiers there every year, I don't know if they do in hand classes, it is a fairly high standard from previous times I have been, they have a website have look the schedules should be on there now, I am only about 20 minutes from there so ideal for me, I agree with Natntaz I don't think Hocon is the same as it used to be, I think when it was all outdoors on one day it was a nicer show I am trying to get there this year may as well have a go, Felsted is a lovely show we won everything there when Arabi was two the judges loved him.
Edited: A few years back they ran a Arab in hand clinic near Writtle college, we took Arabi when he was two it was really helpfull as we had never done anything like this before, he did spend most of it on his hind legs but it was a day out, I will see if they do anything like it anymore and let you know. |

Hocon was the first show my mare and I have ever been too. She did me proud bless getting a very respectable fourth in the Amateur mares class I also entered her into the senior purebred mares and I knew whilst we were waiting in the collecting ring that she probably wouldn't get placed as she has never been show trained and was not being shown by a professional but as we went for the experience where we came on the day didn't matter. I won't be taking her there this year though as I feel it was a bit out of our league and as I cant afford for her to be show trained I think amateur/county showing would suit us better. |

Pashion, we all have different experiences of Hocon.
I used to love it when i used to show my old boy but
have to say i think Showing Arabs has changed a lot
since then. I dont think you had the professionals like
you do now days. I had mixed results last year good and
bad but i think for people who cant afford the professional
to do it or actually want to do it there self its a bit
of a different story. I dont think its just Hocon that is
like it its just the one that a lot of us in Essex always
like to do but have to say i really dont think its is anywhere
near as enjoyable as it used to be. JMO. I know people used to
moan when it was outside but i think it was nicer in the respect
that you could have your horses there and still see what was going
on in the rings and also you could see when the classes were going
in and out so you knew when your turn would be. I never leave my
horses unattended so it isnt so enjoyable if you are basically looking at a box all day rather than seeing all the lovely horses
being shown in the rings. Again JMO
I do think things need to be looked at to see how it would be
supported more. If numbers are down it should be asked WHY  |

I don't know which hocon everyone went to but I was there last year, the only class I saw any clapping and whooping in was the one Hakka entered, he loved it, and he was the only one in it lol!! All his friends yelled for him! And his handler went for the marathon by lapping the arena until told to stop before she had a coronary lol!!
I took a VERY green coloured filly, who enjoyed herself, and wasnt frightened, and the amateur class was very serene. I only noticed any clapping/noise when winners/champions were announced, and that wasnt excessive. I'm sorry if the odd horse was upset by its surroundings but the majority had a whale of a time. Its a shame that the odd few put off new contenders from our already under supported shows. |

Brook Farm have one on the 26th March....i may have finished malting his coat by then so may give that one a go, il let you know.
Definately would like to go to the Felstead this year as the one show i did last year was the rayleigh and district, the judge really liked azie and told me i need to get out more and i think he judges at the Felsted |

Brook Farm have affiliated ridden classes, last year was a good turn out, the unaffiliated in hand classes are mixed and seem to be fair, plus they do good food and it's inside!
Felstead also has inhand arab classes and I believe Norton Health have had the in the past.
What a shame the young farmers are not having classes this year.
Can vouch for the EAG show and would recommend it with out a doubt, everyone is friendly and I'm sure you would enjoy it!!

Yes i think the more i hear about HOCON the less i want to go.
Im in Mayland, just out side of Maldon so not far from you!
I think ive decided on the Herts County Show as can get a ride with a friend to that one, all the horseboxes are full for the Suffolk show other wise id go to that one.
Has anyone experienced the Brook Farm Arab classes? what are they like? full? fair? |

I certainly felt out of my league at HOCON - Eba did so well at the EYF, utterly ignore the noise and all the stuff in the background. But she didn't travel well - it was a box I had hired and she hadn't been in before, and I was unable to borrow a pony to keep her company, so she sort of exploded off the box. Then the going inside and the noise was more than she was prepared to put up with. She didn't tank off or anything, but she would only keep two feet on the ground at any one time. There are some more local shows where they aren't arab classes, but as I don't have easy access to trasnport, I think I might do some clinics instead this year - the EAG has one at Newmarket soon I was considering, but I have only just sat back on her for the first time since November, as we went to New Zealand for a month over Xmas, so I am not sure we are quite ready for that. There are some goodd clinics at Shillington Polo Club, Radwinter and Ashen in Sudbury. Not all are super close, but I want to see if I can get there.
It is a shame I think not to get out more, but I accept she is not a super showy arab, so I am probably better focusing on dressage and pleasure rides.
Hope you find some others you can get to.
Whereabouts in Essex are you? We are top end above Saffron Walden.

I contacted the EYFarmers show and they arent doing Arabs this year...i wish i had done that one last year!
I was thinking about going to HOCON this year but had heard it was more of a professional/breeders show, so think i may change my mind on entering that one, may just end up being a waste of money...having looked at photos from the HOCON & UKIAHS it looks like its a little out of my league!

I only went an looked at the EAG show last spring to get an idea, and was thinking of the autumn one which was cancelled. It was a quiet well run show from the look at it, with some professional handlers there, but the atmosphere seemed very quiet and chilled. I was thinking of the EAG one again, but I don't have transport and even if I can find the funds, wasn't sure whether the journey would be a bit much from Cambridge, as she isn't the greatest of travellers on her own, so until I bite the bullet and get a pony for the kids we are limited.
I took my girl to HOCON under the impression it would be something similar. They are both indoors, but HOCON was much more full on, in my opinion. The audience clap the horses in, which are supposed to enter the school at trot. For my girl who had never been in an indoors school before, it was all a bit much and we just ended up with a lot of rearing and bucking on the end of the rope. Unsurprisingly we got a 'special' rosette, which pretty much described it all in the amateur class and left before the mares class as there was no point going there.
Does anyone know if the Essex Young Farmers Show is doing Arabs again? That was a good show where despite all the fairground noise and kids with balloons we were much better behaved.

Hi, don't know how far you are prepared to travel but the eastern arabian group spring show is on sun 10th of april at easton college near norwich which is a brilliant venue, and a lovely friendly show. Stabling is also available |

Unfortunatly we dont seem to have many show for Arabs
in our local Area these days. Which is such a shame as
i and others i know would like to do more but dont want
to travel to far to do them.

Welcome!
Hocon is a great show, are you looking at in hand or ridden? Yvonne Marriot is the Show Secretary, if you look on the AHS webiste you should be able to obtain her details under regional groups. She also post on here...I think her name on here is Cinders....Not entirely sure though.
