Posted - 04 Aug 2010 : 12:21:56 AM Hi well I'll try and explain my confusion best I can! We went to a local show recently in a mixed Arab and partbred class. No big suprise all partbreds in top three !(ridden) One of these horses being a beautiful floaty pony I later saw this pony at another show where I was spectating and someone pointed out it's knee action which comes right out to one side on one particular leg! I'm a little confused as pony seems to do well but surely this would mark it down massively? But then me and my mare got placed way below it because of our splint?(this was inhand)
Oh and the otherthing that has always confused us but impretty sure there is no answer why do the partbreds always place higher than the purebreds ?
I understand it is the judges choice at the end of the day just wondered if I was thinking along the right lines or if I'm completly missing the point?

Posted - 06 Aug 2010 : 08:18:40 AM We took a sport horse yearling to a local show last year. Initially she was pulled in first, but then he pushed her to the bottom as he said she had curbs! He then went about announcing it to all the spectators at the ringside & the handler was told to stop lunging her. She had only ever been worked in hand (never lunged) & we were so concerned we had he legs checked. No curbs whatsoever, just lovely legs.
Same judge did the pure/part bred class which I chose not to put my arab yearling in. There were 2 entrants, a very fat pony & a lovely pure bred black stallion. I know this boy as I had a long chat with his owners that year when he attended a stallion parade. Very lovely, excellent breeding & nature. Not surprisingly the judge placed the podgy show pony who had been rearing at the ring enrtance first & the impeccably behaved stallion second. You just watch this & think is it a personal vendetta against pure breds. That stallion had so much about him the pony shouldn't have even been in the same ring.

Posted - 04 Aug 2010 : 12:34:10 PM Local shows are a lottery and I suspect it's mainly because these aren't Arab people, know little about Arabs and have always favoured the neatly plaited show pony/hunter type. Some part-breds at local shows definately do deserve to win the part bred Arab classes as some of the purebreds are not of sufficient quality. But I think the class title is often a bit of a misnomer - if you have an inhand or ridden Arab class (for Arabs, partbreds and Anglos) are you looking for the best of the Arab in them? And how is the judge supposed to do that when they know little about the breed?
I do agree with Pashon, there's no excuse for putting a horse with a bad conformation fault first over those with good conformation and the other necessary qualities.

Posted - 04 Aug 2010 : 12:00:13 PM I don't want to insult any local level judges and am not pointing my finger at anyone, but I have found that most of these judges judge ALL the classes at the local show, so will be looking at anything from a shetland to a shire. No one knows what type of horse they keep at home but this will have a huge bearing on what they choose to win a class. For the most part it will certainly not be purebred arabs so they then choose partbreds (some of which look like the nearest they have been to an arab is standing next to one) to win classes as they are the type they are most comfortable with. Having said this there is no excuse for a horse/pony doing well with an obvious conformational fault, but sometimes judges are pulled in from anywhere and really do not have the experience to notice this. If I was judging and a better horse came in the ring but had a splint/scars etc he would still win, as this is not conformational but injury. If he came in dishing/plaiting general poor movement he would not. I have recently been to a local show to school my yearling, he is underweight and I know this (typical yearling, keeps growing and forgets to fill out at the same speed), he was placed first and champion over what I considered fat horses (something local level judges normally seem to like), but in this case obviously the judge could see his conformation was good and made allowances for his weight because of age..............first time I have seen this in years as normally the podgy partbreds win!!
