Hello All!

I am after some advice with regard to show dress for myself and my gelding.

We are hoping to go to the Midland Show later this month and currently I have no arab tack or clothes for myself!
I have only had him a few months and I was showing cobs before I got him so I have tweeds but no navy hat.

Can I get away with a black cap? And and beige jodhpurs?

He is currently ridden in a Dr Cooks bitless bridle.
Could I show him in hand in one of those?
This is what is looks like... (although the noseband is higher up with mine)
http://www.actionridertack.com/catalog/images/bitless-bridle_cook.jpg
If not, is forking out for a native/cable halter the only way?

What is the score with bridles in a ridden class? The dr cooks is very gentle and he goes lovely in it so thats all I have been using recently.
Do you have to use a double bridle?
If you do can you get away with a pelham?

I'd really like to get him out into shows, but I have just had my lorry refloored and I'm a bit skint to go buying new jodhs, halters, hats etc!

Any help would be appreciated, I really want to go but making all that effort to not be placed because of our dress would be a shame.

Is a navy hat still fine with green keeper's tweeds? I've just bought a gorgeous green jacket, and as a designer, my colour instincts say NO! But does ettiquette say yes????

Failing that, I have my side-saddle bowler (black), or I am going to have to bit the bullet and buy something?

Also, can anyone recommend a brand of joddy boot that fit wide feet? Mine have always been wide, and years on being stood on have only made things worse, LOL!

I have caved!

Have found a lovely arab halter on ebay and have invested in a descent double bridle for him too.

(After all if it doesn't work out I can always pop them both back on ebay!)

Will do my best to get hold of a navy hat but going to have to convince my husband of the need for it as I already have one black velvet show, 1 troxel and 2 skulls gathering dust in the cupboard!

Thank you very much for your help, I will def check out the AHS site - don't know why I didn't think of that myself!

Cheers!

Hi,

Have a look on the articles pages on the forum as there is a good article on what to wear. Also, the AHS rules for showing are good - they are on the AHS website!

I will try to help a bit if I can...

For in-hand really you need an in-hand halter if they are purebred BUT you can buy cheap plain versions in your local tack shop disguised as 'be nice halters' or something similar - basically fine soft rope. Colour is your preference - I use red on my Bay.

For you, smart trousers and smart shirt (and a hat if you want to). Take a look at some of the photographer's websites like "sweet photography" to get an idea.

For ridden - it should be brown English tack (straight cut saddle). The bridle can be Snaffle/Double or Pelham for Novice (Pelham or Double for Open). Browband should be plain BUT everyone uses coloured ones now so completely up to you!

Tweed and Beige Johds are absolutely correct. You should have a Navy hat, but if not, don't worry too much! To be honest no judge will not place a good horse due to the rider's hat! If you can, get a Navy cover, but if not, I am sure it won't affect your placing unless the judge is just looking for an excuse!

Hope this helps!
