Well this weekend sees a whole new chapter beginning at Chapel Lane Arabians.

I am very pleased to announce that I have a cremello mare arriving on Saturday.

This special girl is MidOak Maiden Ice, she is 8 years old & 55.7% Arabian. She has been scanned in foal to Mahalias Marcus a chestnut pure bred Arabian stallion owned by Pinewood Palominos.

Vanilla has bred 2 foals for Pinewood Palominos - SirNunn Golden Mover & SirNunn Paradise Gold.

My aim is to breed high % dilute Arabians. For those of you, who are not familiar with dilutes they come in a range of colours, the most popular being palomino, dun & cremello.

I am new to this PBA & dilute game so any words of advice or encouragement from my fellow A Liners would be greatly appreciated.

For those of you that think I'm dissing the Pure Breds, that is certainly not the case. I still have my beautiful Alisianne, who will be shown as a Veteran next year and the very special Persian Rhoubi, whose Dam Vlacq Keonwe I lost this Summer. Hopefully in the future Rhoubi will continue my pure bred breeding program, just have to find her a wonderful husband.

I wasn't there, but people who went to the local riding club show last week told me about a stunning black cob with a white tail - gulastra plume? You're right, it is addictive!

Garnet, be warned, it's addictive! :) You'll be keeping your eye out for silver bays and gulastra plumes before you know it. ;)

A whole hour later, after looking at Faracat's links, I have learned some fascinating facts but am no longer sure what colour my own horses are! Garnet had definite countershading features and Red seems to have the rabicano gene. A lot more to this than meets the eye!

Thank you Faracat; that's really interesting. Wow, those zebra stripes, especially on the bay dun!

We have a dun Highland pony on the yard - he has a very prominent dorsal stripe but at certain times of year his colour is best described as pink and his head has gone grey!

Another friend has a cream dun Highland who is now (at 25) pure white.

Sab2 he's beautiful Does he have flaxen too?
sab2 Posted - 16 Apr 2014 : 5:38:34 PM

This is a chestnut dun , hes my mini stallion , just gone to his new home 2 days ago.
Faracat Posted - 16 Apr 2014 : 2:58:26 PM
No, not Dun, but you can get countershading (Sooty) that causes dorsal stripes, leg shading etc...

Look at the bay arab in the Sooty section on here. :)

Can you get a bay dun arab! My Arabi is a very pale bay and he has a dorsal stripe and really looks like that bay dun picture, he also has light flecks in his black socks in summer.

My welsh x tb is registered as a dun with the welsh pony society but is actually a buckskin - palomino dam and bay sire - he does not have a dorsal stripe and is I suppose, a reverse palomino. He has beautiful stockings, no sign of zebra stripes on them, and chocolate tipped ears, and in winter he has darker body hair almost light chestnut, in the spring he goes very dark on his neck and shoulders (my Mum describes it as looking like he has stuck his head up the chimney - a sooty effect) and in the summer he is apricot with dark accents.

Yes you can tell by eye, but some buckskins have countershading which makes it harder in those cases as the countershading can cause a dorsal stripe etc... Then you can get horses with both Dun and Cream.

http://www.grullablue.com/colors/dun_factor_markings.htm

Black + Dun is sometimes called Grullo/grulla (depending on the horse's gender).

Red Dun

Bay Dun (you can see that this looks similar to buckskin)

Black Dun (this is quite a pale one)

Dunalino (chestnut + dun + cream) an example of a horse with both dun and cream.

ETA this link again, as it's really worth looking at this site if you want to know more. It's very straightforward with photos and starts with the base colours and goes from there logically.

I thought buckskin was the American word for dun! Can they be distinguished by eye or only by their genotype? Fascinating subject!
Faracat Posted - 07 Apr 2014 : 2:36:43 PM
I hope I didn't upset you. Some people get upset when they learn that their Dun isn't a Dun - I don't know why as the horse is still the same and buckskin is a pretty colour? It's a very common mistake in the UK, as in the past people thought that buckskin and bay dun were the same thing, however the advances in science showed that the two very similar looking colours were in fact caused by different genes.

A lot of people still have to catch up with this new knowledge, Connemaras for example have the Cream gene, yet people hardly ever correctly identify them as buckskin. The Welsh world is doing a little better and I do see ads for buckskin Welshies and only a few incorrectly called Dun.

Thanks for the correction Faracat

Firstly congratulations on your new mare and I bet you're counting the days until she foals in July. I can't wait to see photos of them.

Sorry to be pedantic, but a single copy of Cream on a black + agouti base gives a buckskin, not a Dun. Dun is a separate gene from Cream.

This website is wonderful for anyone who wants to know more.

Visitors always welcome, well when the mud has gone! She is more Mudello than Cremello at the moment
glo Posted - 02 Jan 2014 : 6:02:30 PM
Sorry, I would not be much help in that regard, but would still love to see her some time.

Hi Glo
Our foal isn't due until July but I do have a picture of Nilly, only a head shot over the stable door, but if someone would like to add it for me I'd be grateful (bit of a technophobe here)

Just seen your post, would love a photo of the mare and foal when it arrives, I too am looking to breed high % Arab palominos and have got 2 very nice filly's to start with.
Callisto Posted - 28 Dec 2013 : 2:59:28 PM
Sounds like a very exciting project, please keep us posted with your progress

Lucky you! I'm a big fan of Midoak horse having had one myself for many years. It would be nice to see a photo when you have one.
