I am trying to trace any information about a dun Karaback stallion that HM the Queen was given from Russia in the 60ies. This stallion was standing at Kingsettle Stud for some years. My mother bought a dun filly by him in the late 60ies, out of a mare by Waterfall (PBA)
We have now the 5th generation out of that mare.

Lovely photos. especially the one of him looking at the camera. He was a handsome boy.

I'm racking my brains back to Kingsettle Stud in 1970. The only palomino brood mare I recall was the beautiful Kingsettle Pagoda (Golden Trail/Lakme), the others were mostly chestnut. The 3 generations of palomino stallions were there: Golden Trail, Kingsettle Zecchino and Kingsettle Cruzado.

Zaman was pts about 6 weeks or so after I arrived at Kingsettle. I do not recall any stock by him on the stud. I do remember that a pony mare arrived with a young cream coloured foal which I believe was by Zaman. The foal was very sick with joint ill and the deal was that if Mrs. Howell could save it, she could have it. Sadly it died. I can't remember if the mare had returned to the stud to be covered again, if so it was not by Zaman as it was several weeks after he had been pts.

Had the foal lived, would the cream have darkened to the Karabakh golden dun? I haven't a clue.

So, in answer to your question .... I don't know but I don't think so. His main use may have been for visiting pony mares. I believe he was the only Karabakh stallion ever to stand at stud in the UK. Unless anybody knows different .....

I remember seeing pictures of Zaman in a book about the Queen's animals years ago. If you google images "Zaman Karabakh" there are three gorgeous colour pictures of him.

If he was at Kingsettle stud did Mrs. Howell use him to breed palominos? he was a stunning horse and a beautiful colour.

I tried to shrink it to upload it but it's now bigger than the original in the book. Somewhere I have an old "Pony" magazine from the 70s and the cover is a beautiful headshot of Zaman. I'd better not try to upload that or it might take up the whole forum!! Heehee.

Zaman was "my" stallion to do when I was at Kingsettle Stud in 1970 as a working pupil. (Do they still exist?)

He was a perfect gentleman and the most beautiful golden dun colour which I believe is a typical Karabakh colour and rare in other breeds. He would have been 18 years old when he was pts in March of that year.

The photo on Allbreedpedigree.com looks nothing like him. I'm new at this but I'll attempt to upload a photo of him which is from the book "Horses" by Kate Reddick.

Do you mean this stallion?

In 1956 a Karabakh stallion named Zaman, along with an Akhal-Teke named Mele-Kush was presented by the Soviet government to the Queen of Britain, Elizabeth II. He stood at Kingsettle, there is a picture of him on allbreed pedigree. Apparently the Queen often rode him before he was loaned to the stud.
