Just out of interest I started looking at my welsh C x tb pony's pedigree on his welsh side (I only have the name and not the breeding of his thoroughbred father), he has a couple of links back to Sahara who was used at the start of the twentieth century, but also if you go further back the Crawshay Arabian crops up several times, foaled in 1835. Does anyone know anything about this horse? There is also Hackney blood in there too from about a hundred years or so ago. Buzz is a 14.1hh dun. Here is the link to his pedigree on all breeds.

Don't forget from my earlier posting above,
'and which goes all the way back to the Byerley Turk 1680 and the Darley Arabian 1700, all which can be found in the link below through HEROD 1758'.

If you trawl back through the TB lines you'll find more Arabian blood in Darley & Godolphine..leaving Eclipse's link..

These ponies have some of the best Arabian/Barb blood going..and which is present in all those famous Thoroughbreds of today. Oaks winners and all.

Google 'Cyfarthfa Castle' and see the home of the Crawshay family and Arab.

Cheers Sue

I'm interested in any other info about the Crawshay,Richard Crawshay (1786 - 1859), have checked out where they lived and how they made their living from Iron, employing thousands of workers, located in Mertha Tidfil..but no mention of horses at all, so far.
They lived at Cyfarthfa Castle...and I mean castle not just a place...
I have found one or two Crawshaw that were racing TB's in 1869's....
Any more info on the Arab and any other horses..
Please.
Sue

Thanks for posting your pic..nice one...

I reckon we owe it to the officers out there in the British Empire at the turn of the century, passing there leisure time playing polo and racing those Desert breds and Indian ponies.....bringing them back home was the key. Nice to think they felt the same way we all do about the horses..loved them.

You could try the google book search for the TB's line..
Cheers Sue

PS... Are you doing Red Dragon..will be there... Sue

We also own another pony bred by Dr Lloyd, Quincey is his grandsire on his dam"s side. His entry on all breeds is somewhat incomplete - so sorting that out can be my next job

Here is the link to his entry.http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/quern+hereward

I suppose it is no surprise that Sahara and the Crawshay Arabian crop up in his ancestry too....

Cheers

Hi Sue,

Buzz wasn't at Windsor, we only got him back from his loan home less than a month ago, Zahkira is my grey 5 year old Arab mare, and yes there were some brilliant pics, but I'm not allowed to post the link to a commercial site. We did a training ride at Penshurst today, and here is a pic of Buzz, ridden by my niece Annie

He was somewhat overweight when we got him back, and he's still rather plump, but we're getting there

He was bred in East Sussex by Dr Margaret Lloyd, who I suppose would be the best person to contact to discover Quincey's breeding. His full sister was sold to Ireland as a jumping pony, but I don't know that one's name (it will be Quern Something). I know she has been breeding welsh ponies for decades, and they tend to be very good at jumping. Buzz's mother was a palomino, and Quincey is definitely a bay.

I managed to find a copy of the book from an Amazon seller for £7, just waiting for it to arrive...

I also do a bit of Endurance, been to loads of rides this time..but crewing... but never did Windsor Park this time...Do you call him Zahkira..
There should be some good pics from that ride..have you got the link..
and need more research to find the TB sire...Maybe you'll have to do a search and complete his pedigreeHave you any idea where he was bred in Wales and maybe the TB stallion covred other mares and have other stock about...to identify him.. ( I bet he's not Dunn).
Also the Sahara imput in your horses pedigree was from when Sahara was stationed with Mr Aldridge in Leicster after Sahara changed hads at the Royal Welsh Show in 1919.
Cheers Sue
and you've just missed a baragin on ebay for the book...it had no bids and was under a £10 er including the postage.... I should just wait and there will be another coming along I guess.soon.
Leaving the link to the archives...

Thank you very much for all that information Sue, he has more Arab blood and illustrious forebears than I dreamed of! He has a very sweet nature, jumps like a stag and is showing great promise at endurance too - if only I had owned him when I was 15...He gets a lot of favourable comments when he is out, I think his flashy colouring helps with that. I don't have any particularly flattering photos of him, but the one I have posted was taken last year when he was 6. I had to add it to my previous post because for some reason the Flickr button wouldn't work on this one. I have met his father, who was a bay 16hh thoroughbred, now sadly deceased, but I would think he was at least 20 when he died last year. He was a nice old boy who ran with his herd of welshies all year round, but I really don't know his parentage, and his name is all I have in Buzz's registration papers (he is registered as a part bred welsh).

I will be ordering the book - I must admit I have found pedigrees increasingly fascinating. Thanks again.

A book for your Christmas List,Welsh Ponies & Cobs, by Dr Wynne Davies, covers most of you horses breeding, a treat not to be missed.....and which goes all the way back to the Byerley Turk 1680 and the Darley Arabian 1700, all which can be found in the link below through HEROD 1758.

KING FLYER goes back to Crawshay Arabian,(also known as the Chawshay Bailey) imported by Richard of the same name, a Dun born 1835~ ............. wonder if this is where your Dun came from...The Chawshay family lived in an edilic Castle setting with Pool and grounds. Google the name ...you'll be amazed at the tour you can go on...Dyoll Moonlight was descended from the Chawshay Bailey Arab 1850~... There was another one mentioned ..imported by Williams..carries the Wms name...

WELSH BRITON, True Briton and back to RULER, registered in the Yorkshire Coach Horse Sud Book. and will give you the rest..I think...

CYMRO LLWYD 1850, was recorded as a Dun, althought Mrs Margaret Daniel Cockshead (famous family for Arabs today), said he was a Bright Cream (Palomino) with long flaxen mane & tail...
Cymro Lloyd's dam, BROWN,(s.Old Comet Brown/d.Derby by Curry Comb
(was a Thoroughbred). So there you have the measure of your Welsh Bred pony/cob...TB, Arab, Welsh, Hackney & some of the oldest and most famous of all the Thoroughbred lines..ever heard of here in GBR...Darley Arabian & Byerley Turk.
Leaving the link.

and not forgetting our favorit of all... Sahara..a Barb.

Bred in the Sahara Desert, bought by an English Officers wife in Gibralter, after he arrived from Morocco, imported to England at the outbreak of world war I, Hunted with the Carmarthen & Breckonshire Hunts, travelled and covered in Wales.Won at the Royal Welsh Show & London Spring Show.Covered Welsh Mountain ponies. Played Polo.. Picture taken at the London Spring Show.

Pelle who posts on here, her Gran Mother was at the London Spring Show when Sahara won his class.
