by Questionnaire (by Caliph out of Sweet Briar)
out of Seine (TB)

Also wondering if Questionnaire and Caliph was registered with AHS.

My mother talked the other day with an old friend who was one of the first mareowners to send mares to Any Questions when he was imported to sweden. That lady claimed that Any Questions was registed in Weatherbys Non-TB register when imported to sweden, otherwise he would never have been approved for breeding with Swedish Warmblood Soc. I know that his son (Marsden) St George was registed in Weatherbys Non-Tb register, as we visited Mrs Worsley at Marsden manor in 1989 and saw St George, and she told us that St George's stock was eligible for racing as he had just been approved by Weatherbys Non-Tb reg.

Sorry should be that Anything Goes is born in 1970.
Pelle Posted - 29 Jul 2009 : 11:32:04 PM
While looking for another horse in PBA vol XIII , I found a mare called Anything Goes
chestnut, bred by the Hon. E Keyes.
by Any Questions 1970
ex Glory Bee AASB vol V.
It doesnt say that Any Questions is registed as PBA or anything else.

Have heard the expression quantock ponies.......methinks it is ponies bred on the Quantock Hills in Somerset ...might be wrong

Did go and see Any Questions many year ago, when he was with Fergus Grahame. Super Horse, great looks and conformation and huge huge jumping ability. He was definitely not a registered Anglo Arab. Really liked him but did not cover my Anglo Mare with him as he was not registered AASB

Caliph must have been used at stud quite a lot while in devon, another horse imported by my mother in 1980 was a gelding called Half n Half by Lunaris (GSB HIS?) out of Half Pint by Hookey Boy (GSB?) out of Git Gay by CALIPH out of Tudor by Tubor Bell(Tudor Bells GSB /HIS?).
We have also records of ponies imported in 59-69 by Caliph out of Quantock pony mares. Does anyone knows what Quantock pony mares is? is it a local type of pony?

Hello Pelle,
Snowcloud was registered with the H.I.S. and her owner and breeder lived in Devon.
I've put details of her here;
http://www.sporthorse-data.com/d?d=snowcloud
I haven't found Folly Gate nor Miss Hotty.
Kalminos was in the H.I.S. scheme 1969 and 1970 in South Devon.

Hi Melinda, Just to throw a spanner in the works, I've found another ANY QUESTIONS (foaled in 1958)S.Cervin/d. Pervanna. Bred by Mrs Ratcliff, in Warwickshire. He's an Anglo Arab and was shown at the AHS show of 1962 by his owner Miss P E Decker.Stanmore.Middlesex.

Cheers Sue

Is it possible that Caliph at one time stood at stud in Devon?
My mother has looked at her notes about showjumpers she imported in 50-60-70ies.
in 1965 she imported one gelding called Folly Gate by Caliph ex Snowcloud (grey argentine mare) by The Satrap vol XXVI p 910 by The Tetrarch bought from a lady outside Inwardleigh.
in 1975(?) she imported a mare called Miss Hotty by Kaliminos (HIS?) ex Whipper by Caliph ex Quantock pony mare bred by a Mr Stockman (Stockham?) in Dunster. This mare was sold to Norway after 2 seasons in sweden and later used for breeding so I will try to get details from Norway concerning Caliph.

Caliph is definitely registered with the AHS, but neither Questionnaire or Any questions are registered with them.

Caliph: Grey (1951)was registered as an Anglo in Vol. 5. He is by Shagya Basa out of a mare named Finishing School, who was a Thoroughbred.

It looks as though Caliph was not correctly registered in the Part bred book, as already said, Shagya Basa was originally registered as an Anglo.

Hope this helps.

Yes Sue, I have seen this before and the two offsprings are the same horse!
I tend to use Sport Horse Breed Data Base instead as it is more secure and trustworthy.

I have also looked up the horses which are mentioned in his pedigree in Any Questions's stallion advert in the Swedish magazine Ridsport 1975.

It says his sire Questionnaire was a remarkable jumper and winner of a steeplechase. I've found a point-to-pointer with the same name who was 8 years in 1965 and came second in the Hunt Race. He is stated as being by unknown sire (which could be Caliph, as he is not recognised by Weatherbys) out of T.B. mare called Seine by French Partridge.
This is a bit strange as this mare Seine also had Any Questions according to his breeding. So is there a generation missing on Any Questions sireline?

Caliph is stated as owned by Mr Poles, a vet and though he never competed he was a reknown jumper and hunter and sired many wellknown offspring.
I just wonder where they all are?

Any Questions offspring (earliest one born 1969) mentioned in the advert are;

Bondsman, unbeaten in the showring, Champion at Oxford and Newark Show and a very promising jumper.

Any Answers, Winner of Foxhunter classes.

Question Time, winner and placed Eventing.

Question Mark, exported to Italy, promising jumper.

Cat's Whiskers II, exported to Schweiz winner in jumping.

Ballywalter Park, born 1970 promising jumper.

Mark Time, exported to Italy, winner at Royal Show and 2nd at Royal Cornwall.

I think you'll have already seen this sire with the two recorded off springs ( may be the same one.) Looks like he might be recorded as an anglo.

I'm also leaving the link to Henry Wynnmaylens Shaga Arab. the one that was born in 1931 and imported to GB, only produced Greys and was unbeaten under saddle here.. Shaga Basa could take up several full pages on its own. I also had one in the 1960ies.

Any Questions was found and produced for showjumping by the dealer Fergus Graham, and was ridden by his wife Paula. I think they competed internationally, I saw them in 1971 or 1972 at a big show in south of sweden.

My mother told me once a long time ago, that Caliph was wrongly registed as Angloarab, as his grandsire Basa-Shagya was first registed as angloarab but it then turned out he was Shagya-arab, not anglo. In PBAR vol IV Basa-Shagya XVII-3 has several offspring registed and it says Basa-Shagya XVII-3 (angloarab studbook vol V ) by ShagyaXVII out of 174 Shagya. My mother remember this very well as she once imported an english angloarabmare that was refused entry in the swedish anglostudbook as the mare's grandsire was Basa-Shagya.
Another stallion called Shagya XXV-12 had the same dam as Basa-Shagya and was also wrongly registed as angloarab, and stood at stud in South Africa and he sired some anglos that later was refused entry into angloarab studbook due to his Shagya breeding.

Yes, that is the correct horse I am trying to trace backwards.
Just wanted to make sure that the stated breeding was correct and all the registrations quoted existed.

I sent my Irish Draught mare to a stallion called Any Questions in the 70s He stood with Lars Sederholme near Banbury Oxfordshire. Maybe not the horse you are looking for but the date is probably about right.
Melynda Posted - 18 Jul 2009 : 7:37:35 PM
Thanks for looking.
I am trying to find this Questionnaire;

http://www.sporthorse-data.com/d?i=458766

I know it says British warmblood but I don't think that is correct. I have looked through the Hunter Stud Books from that era but haven't found anthing so far. I know Sweer Briar is correct as I have found her in the GSB and two of her named offspring.
I think I have read something about a stallion called Caliph a while ago.

Hi - can't find a pure bred called Questionnaire or Sweet Briar registered with the AHSB. There are two Caliph's - one born 1924 with no registered progeny and one 1966 with one grey stallion called Azmar registered progeny born 1971.
