Posted - 15 Jun 2011 : 11:22:03 AM My mare foaled Sunday evening and as she is chasing after the foal in the field, she is losing quite a lot of urine as she trots around after him. Is this normal?. I havn't experienced it with my old mare before. Is it just because things have not tightened up yet? |

Posted - 16 Jun 2011 : 1:24:06 PM I totally agree with Barbara, it may be that your mare is only expelling excess birth fluids with can range from urine colour to slighty brownish, as barbara says if the mare becomes jaded or the fluid turns thicker and puss like you may need to get her checked out.I always like my mares out with their foals as soon as possible (weather permitting of course) so they can expell any birth remnants, after all it is only what they would be doing in the wild. |

Posted - 16 Jun 2011 : 11:54:23 AM If the urine is not pussey or heavily bloodstained it is probably OK, some mares do that especially if it is a first or very large foal. If she is eating well and there are no other problems she is probably fine but if there are any other signs of things not being right get the vet ASAP as you don't want her ill and not able to feed her foal.
