ASs I have already posted on here some time ago, Milly had a very bad bout of colic and the vet insisted on doing blood test two days later. He was convinced there was something very wrong with her. I tried to explain that she was very tucked up and it was not weight loss. I allowed him to do the blood test and when the results came back he wanted to do another one in one week as the urea was slightly up but the Creatinine result was normal (dehydration?). The blood test results were very good for a mare of 27 but did show slight dehydration. I said to him that was probably so as she had not drunk or really eaten for 48 hours. I refused the second blood test.

She was absolutely back to norm by Tuesday and is now fantastically well. My real question is do you think £170 for a pre-booked blood test is reasonable? I just feel that the young man who is not long qualified was being over cautious.

Sorry this is so long.

Barbara your more than welcome, but I think your call out would be a little bit more than £15.00, on this particular visit the call out was only £7.50 because it was shared, must point out though they do charge for every single thing they do on the visit

I had blood taken in February as Arabi was unwell, for the call out and the blood it was £148 which I thought was not too bad considering the call out is about £40, they showed he had a virus and she wanted to take more blood about two weeks later which I also thought unecessary. My vet also do the testing at their surgery so hearing what others have paid mine sounds expensive.

Can I use your vet, Marion, will he come to Suffolk? My vet is £50 just for the visit, bloods would be another £80ish on top of that depending on what was done.

Would it depend on what they are testing for, I had Sam annual blood test done for liver & kidney due to being on bute, and this was £50.00 including the visist

newly qualified vets always worry about missing something and......getting sued. They're warned sooo much about it in uni that they sometimes come out 'overly cautious'.I work in a vet practice and new grads are soooo much more cautious than the experienced vets. But I supose you can't really blame them, I think I'd make sure I'd checked everything if I thought I theres a chance of being sued.

Crikey that does seem like an awful lot!

I've just had a look as K had bloods done last year after picking up an infection - the actual taking of the bloods was £22.08 and the lab charges were £70.04. Obviously there was the visit charge on top but that's still an awful lot less than your charge, plus mine wasn't pre-booked - they probably classed my visit as an emergency but there must be something in-between if you see what I mean. I didn't bother with the second lot of tests either as after some antib's and vitb jab she seemed to pick up really quickly.

Does seem an awful lot. Glad your girl is picking up now though.
