Kirstie is in the process of being backed, she has a neule Shuele(sp) starter bit we had it measured by the saddler when she came out so right size. Anyway she puts her tongue over the bit if you put any pressure on at all I need some advice about what to do. I have been told to tighten up the bridle which I did( for about 2mins) but she seems to bring her tongue all the way to the back of her mouth.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
Mary

Unfortunately they are not a 100% solution - I tried one on my old mare and she just learnt how to roll it over through 180 degrees and carried on as before!

Merlyn has been doing the tongue over the bit trick too and has at long last stopped!!

He seemed to hate every bit I tried, with the exception of one. He goes really well in it, doesn't chew, produces plenty saliva and has at long last stopped fussing and putting his tongue over. What is it, you ask?! Very simply a straight bar happy mouth with loose rings! He goes really well in this and has finally stopped being agitated.

They are all individuals though, so what works for one, won't necessarily work for another. It seems to be a youngster thing, putting the tongue over the bit and I try to ignore it as best I can to see if they eventually give up!

My old mare always put her tongue over the bit and as she was perfectly controllable like it, and preferred to go that way, we left her to it, and used a soft, squashy happy mouth bit that she could roll around. We have a photo somewhere of her in a dressage test with her tongue poking out sideways at the judges! However I would agree that it is not ideal and something to be corrected if possible (my mare was old, so no point fussing her).

Do get your youngster's teeth, gums and mouth checked though, it might be that she's doing it because of some slight discomfort.

When Zak was young he used to curl his tongue up behind the bit too. I eventually discovered that a full cheek french link snaffle with fulmer loops really helped as the fulmer loops lift the bit towards the roof of their mouth leaving more room for their tongue to lie under the bit.

I can highly recommend the Neue Schule starter bit once she stops getting her tongue over it, I tried every bit under the sun for Arabi when I backed him and it was the only one he liked and we still use it.

Thank you someone else has suggested that also so will order one tonight. Do they come in different sizes?

This is quite a common problem with youngsters starting work, I personally hate the 'jack the bit up high and make them smile' solution. We have a very light curved thin mouthpiece overcheck bit which we simply put on a sliphead above the snaffle, Usually does the trick.
