For months now my yearling arab colt has been itchy and I have no idea why.
It started in July, he was rubbing his mane til eventually 1/2 of it was gone.
I thought it may have been a sweet itch issue but even today, he is still itchy though now it is just a small middle section of his mane, and he is rubbing his head and neck.
I have tried sweet itch loctions, itch locations, have de-liced him, am putting garlic powder in his feed (from september).
We thought it may have been to do with the Alfa conditiong fibre he was having in his feed, so we stopped this in September, but yet now in November, he still itches. It cant be a sweet itch thing as he doesnt do his tail, and plus it isnt sweet itch season?
I want to get this sorted asap as his showing results were affected due to his lack of mane, and i really want it to grow back for next year!
Any advice is greatly appreciated

I have an itchy mare and have found, so far, the best remedies are to wash her in Vosene and to give her Marmite, Good luck!

My 2yr old who rubs himself and a neighbours pony who has SI were still itchy up until the last few days (think it may be stopping now as it's gone a lot colder). We are high up on a hill and don't have many midges compared to most but obviously the season has gone on much longer this year, so I wouldn't dismiss this. Sue

Posted - 09 Nov 2010 : 08:42:46 AM he has horsehage twice a day and I put water in his feed - he current has Build Up mix with Chaff - we will start feeding him sugarbeet soon too

Posted - 08 Nov 2010 : 5:02:42 PM Kirstie lost most of her mane this year from rubbing so have been searching the web for ideas, so far we have apple ciger vinegar( buy from supermarket to horsey shop 1/3 of the price), marmite in feed and benzelbenoate (sp)you can get it from chemist. I will be trying all of the above start in the new year as her mane is 3 inches long at the minute. mary

Hi Vera - my mum told me to do garlic when we thought it was midges as this repels them - I will stop feeding it to him straight away!!

Posted - 08 Nov 2010 : 1:19:41 PM STOP FEEDING GARLIC NOW!!!!! You are most likely making the problem worse.
Garlic stimulates the immune system and and an overly itchy horse already has an over stimulated immune system.
Feedmark Equidermis Plus is excellent.
By the way beware if you feed Fast Fibre because it too has garlic in it.

Posted - 08 Nov 2010 : 1:05:05 PM Have you tried washing it with a medicated shampoo (and rinsing really thoroughly)? This stopped Lily rubbing both her mane and tail - I washed it with Vosene and then used Megatek conditioner, seemed to do the trick, the megatek is also supposed to encourage growth as well.
