I don't know much about grey's as I've tended to avoid owning one (thoughts of stable stains and going through that looking mucky or dull phase) but I do think grey's can be very striking. I wanted to find out more about the different colours of greys, how quickly each colour changes (from foal to veteran) and if all grey's eventually go flea bitten.

All four greys that I bred changed in different ways. Tamila, born milk chocolate took some time to change but is now at 27 white with milk chocolate fleabites and two blood spots. Rimmy, unforunsately no longer with us, was bourneville chocolate at birth and changed very quickly being dappled at one year. He finally went white and had bourneville chocolate flea bites. Ramak was born chocolate but took ages to go grey and went through varying stages of mucky brown. His sister, Samira (Cleo) was also chocolate but quite light and she has gone pure white at 12. |

LOL, my jaw dropped only a couple of years ago when my Mum asked "when's Roger going to go grey"? Eerrrr.......

Rates at which horses grey can vary enormously - a friend's PBA was 13 before he even showed any signs of turning, but turn grey he eventually did!

Well Lily was chestnut as a foal, and I have found a couple of chestnut fleabites already (she is 5). |

Can anyone advise if different types of feed prolong or even deepen dapples/dark points? I'd also heard that the flea bites turn the same colour the horse was when born. Is this correct? |

Mmmm...still hoping my little grey mare will go either fleabitten or white, but my OH keeps saying theres no way she will, she's rising 10 and still quite dark with dapples but her head is getting so much lighter every year and I have noticed a few flea bites by her ears spreading down her face...she's the grey Arab in my sig pics!! any suggestions on if/when she'll white out or go fleabitten?? |

Ozzy was born black according to his passport ( i wish i had some pictures). He was 4 when i bought him and very dark iron grey with a white tail.
He is 5 and a half now and still fairly dark although his face has gone quite light and he is starting to get some dapple on his shoulders.
He has quite a lot of red hairs in his mane and tail and patches of red hairs on his shoulders so i'm assuming he will eventually go fleabitten.
I love seeing his coat change although i'm not looking forward to the mud and poo stains... |

Rosie was registered liver chestnut turning grey.
6 months old:
4 years old - & who says Arabs can't jump!!! Proof I did ride her before Chelle got her hands on her! lol
& now Rosie at 20 yrs!:

Ihave a gelding that was born bay and went flea bitten grey by the age of ten and looks lovely.Also a chestnut foal that was grey by the age of three.I love my greys. |

Pearl's mum & her mum's 2 full sisters were white grey - no real fleabites...
Pearl seems to be going fleabitten
She seems to change month by month - I don't think she knows herself if she wants to be dappled, fleabitten or white grey |

No, all greys don't eventually go fleabitten although a lot do. I suspect if you looked really closely all greys do have a few fleabites. As to colour change, that varies tremendously. Some white out very quickly. My Crusader son was pink as a yearling (where the chestnut was fading plus the white hairs) and vitually white at 18 months. He is ten now and has a couple of fleabites on his neck but you have yo look hard to see them.
A gelding I bred is five now and he is a beautiful dark dapple grey, very striking. This year's foals, one born bay and one chestnut, are greying very differently. The chestnut will be white very early, she is very pale already, and the bay looked as if she was going to stay bay but now has some grey hairs. The chestnut foals dam who is seven whited out very quickly, she is now getting large patches of chestnut in her coat, not flea bites as they are large areas of colour, will she end up with a predominantly chestnut body and neck again? Her dam is 16 and she is still white but I have noticed a couple of fleabites on her neck recently.
The bay foal's mother is still almost black although she is a grey. That family stay dark for a long time; she is a half sister to the gelding (by the same sire) and the sire was a dark dapple grey.
If I can help any more please ask. The rate of greying/fleabites does seem to be passed on.
