Posted - 14 Feb 2010 : 9:56:33 PM My boy is now working at walk and trot beautifully. Is soft, round, balanced and starting to really work from behind and seems to be very confident in his own ability in these paces. Instructor suggested we start on canter work, starting with a few strides then back to trot etc. While he has picked up the aids quickly he gets rather het up, gets oversensitive to the leg and thinks that he is to canter at the same spot in the school every time we get there. He is very clever, so I am careful not to repeat the same exercise in the same place too often. I have to keep going back to walk to try and calm him, but he still rushes off again in trot thinking he's to canter again. Trying to do only a few transitions at intervals in a half hour session doesn't help him relax either. Advice please? I taught my older boy canter years ago and don't recall ever really having any problems.Thanks

Posted - 17 Feb 2010 : 9:54:34 PM Thanks for your input. See the Spooking thread in AL Discussion for more background on this horse. Jumping and cantering on hacks are a no go for us at the moment, but maybe I'll leave the cantering until later in the year so we can start off on a hack.

Posted - 15 Feb 2010 : 11:54:35 PM Could you do it on teh double lunge first and set up a perfect transition from a voice command. Then ask for it out hacking in a very relaxed way. Then integrate it into schooling and add the aids gradually? Might work. Or do some pole work and small jumps and let him choose to canter and just go with him. It's often the best way to let them find their own rhythm

Posted - 15 Feb 2010 : 7:15:18 PM I found it easier to teach my old boy to canter out hacking, when he was a baby. He was very responsive to voice commands when lunging so I asked him to canter when on a quite short track when hacking... once he had grasped that then used the aid along with the voice. Hope it will be that easy with Ali!!!

Posted - 15 Feb 2010 : 6:10:58 PM Taught my now 18yo to canter out hacking, found it much easier than in the confined space of a school and with a steady companion she learnt to go behind, in front and beside. She is soon to be the one to help teach my 4yo, I hope!
