PLEASE can someone offer some advice, one of my liveries has got a problem, her mare has got a slight cough, the problem being that when she coughs, she produces a very explosive fart, ive tried a mint leaf supplement to help with the flatulence but to no avail. Her belly is not tight or uncomfortable but her owner is upset by the noise. any ideas? cheers sue

Lol this thread has cheered me up You guys are very funny. Though I do find it very strange to be offended by it

This post has really made me laugh my old mare used to do this sometimes when out on a hack, I have had some strange looks from people on foot as it could be really loud, if there were a few of us out riding we used to find it hilarious and blame each other. I cant believe the horses owner would cry about it how funny. I would have laughed at her I don't think I could have stopped myself, you could always tell her to put a radio on in the stable when shes there and turn it up if it starts I assume she is embarrassed of other people hearing it.
Rafa as for rude carrots well I have been in stitches over those.
I am still laughing I cent get over it.

If it's just a slight cough perhaps she could try dampening the hay a little or making the feeds slightly wetter.

Failing that I would suggest a cork..... but then she may accidentally 'shoot' some poor passer by
Karon Posted - 04 Feb 2010 : 10:53:13 AM
Suggest the owner gets a hamster instead?

Seriously, she's offended by this? Even if she's a novice owner surely she realises the horse isn't doing it to annoy her?
Roseanne Posted - 03 Feb 2010 : 11:06:34 PM
Offer the owner some earplugs???
debs Posted - 03 Feb 2010 : 10:04:06 PM
Oooh...sounds like me! Except I don't even need to cough! Think i probably embarrass my horse!!
garnet Posted - 03 Feb 2010 : 8:42:32 PM
Yes, I remember rude veggies!
moonlight Posted - 03 Feb 2010 : 2:43:40 PM
Me too, prapa we should post rude carrot pix?! Anyone here old enough to remember Esther Rantzen on That's Life and their rude veg slot?
Kazzy Posted - 03 Feb 2010 : 2:03:53 PM
I still giggle when Kazzy farts

But then again I still giggle when I find a *rude* carrot in the horse carrot bags

The owner obviously doesn't appreciate toilet humour But we are all different, so she can't be blamed for that.....

Personally, I never tire of laughing at farts but "that's me!"

I was always under the impression that it wasn't a good sign for a horse to fart when it coughs....perhaps you could suggest that she has a chat with her vet?
garnet Posted - 03 Feb 2010 : 12:08:21 PM
This is sad that she is so upset, but WHY is she so upset? Surely all herbivores have a touch of flatulence when their guts are working properly - just some are less discreet and more amusing than others? Is she a new and inexperienced owner?
shfwarrior Posted - 03 Feb 2010 : 08:03:29 AM
do you think I dont know that!!!! I cant help it she came into my house crying yesterday and I realy dont know how to deal with it. I nearly laughed at her, but i know thats not the way to deal with it!!
LIV Posted - 02 Feb 2010 : 9:21:39 PM
This is hysterical! Can't help but the owner really shouldn't be so offended by it.
Pasha Posted - 02 Feb 2010 : 3:56:09 PM
The owner is offended?!

Can't help - one of my boys is windy, but have good digestion so don't worry about it!
Karon Posted - 02 Feb 2010 : 3:25:59 PM
PMSL, my new horse does this and it's taken me a while to get used to it! I assumed it was just one of those strange things he does.
shfwarrior Posted - 02 Feb 2010 : 3:19:54 PM
we have the same problem, but the owner becomes quite offended!!! I"ll try to find out morre about the hops and maybe try one of the herb companies sue
garnet Posted - 02 Feb 2010 : 1:36:54 PM
Jim did the same when his summer cough was particularly bad (he had to use inhalers). We didn't do anything about it - the time to worry is when the same problem afflicts the owner! I have to admit that we would sometimes nearly collapse with laughter at the poor lad!
Sue J Posted - 02 Feb 2010 : 11:08:16 AM
My 24yr old Anglo Arab mare has always done this when she coughs it's never seemed to cause her a problem but be interested to know if anyone has any useful remedies.
Callisto Posted - 02 Feb 2010 : 10:58:19 AM
I have read that hops can help with flatulence in horses, however I haven't needed to try it so I cannot vouch for their efficacy, I do not know what the dosage would be, but it might be worth some research...?
