Posted - 19 Jan 2010 : 11:13:02 AM Any recommendations for the kindest girth. Ishara is a very sensitive soul and have to be very careful when doing her girth up so thought i'd see if I could get her a more comforable one if possible. Might get her a fleecy cover for it otherwise. |

Posted - 23 Jan 2010 : 5:34:29 PM Tacked her up today, first time since snow and she was good as gold. I think after her saddle was slipping a bit when she got wider I was doing the girth up too tight because of it. Anyway kept it one hole looser today and she was fine plus she's had some flocking taken out of saddle so hopefully fits better now. Will still have a look at these other girths. Someone showed me the aeroborn today and not sure about it looks quite thin. Anyway the queue at tack shop was too long so will go in the week when it's quieter and have a look at some different types. Thanks for all the suggestions. |

Posted - 23 Jan 2010 : 12:48:25 AM Could also be the time of year - they can feel pretty pants when about to moult, and the mild spell can make then start the longing for spring so maybe she's just being a moody girl!!
(I use the chafeless girths a lot btw, and leather atherstons) |

Posted - 22 Jan 2010 : 9:58:04 PM Funny you should say that cause her saddle has been away all week but i've been putting a surcingle round her everynight as she's even reacting to that! Anyway I did start doing up on the other side but she still pull faces although cow kicking has stopped. I have come to the conclusion though that whilst she is very sensitive she is definately completely taking the pee out of me! LOL |

Posted - 22 Jan 2010 : 6:37:31 PM Just a thought Jo - are you always girthing up on the same side? Shah woudl always pull faces when you did his girth on near side. He was never girthy/backy but just learned to pull a face for some reason. So I swapped to attach girth on nearside, do it up on off side. He still pulled a face so it was just his funny habit Try it - she might to far too clever for her own good that Pickle of yours! |

Posted - 22 Jan 2010 : 5:06:00 PM My vote is for the Stubben cord girth - haven't had any problems with it at all, but I'm afraid I have had a bad experience with an aerborn humane girth - ended up with a rub on my extremely thin skinned welsh/tb cross. |

Posted - 22 Jan 2010 : 4:01:46 PM I use a Professional Equestrian one, elasticated both sides, my old mare and youngster both seem fine with it, they are recommended by the Balance Saddle people. x |

Posted - 22 Jan 2010 : 12:47:00 PM We need a dressage girth, as I have a Heather Moffett treeless saddle, and I struggled to find a girth that didn't rub.
I use one of the elasticated Wintec girths on mine, with a proper sheepskin girth sleeve. I tried the shaped Wintec anti-chafe girth prior to that, but it was too wide and rubbed the back of her elbows even with a girth sleeve. Neoprene girths don't agree with her, either. I have my eye on the Mattes Asymmetric sheepskin girths - they look lovely, but they're not cheap (about £87 inc vat). Must remember to talk nicely to OH tonight!! |

Posted - 20 Jan 2010 : 08:04:11 AM Another vote for the Stubben string girth. Would love a mohair but never found one for normal saddle to buy in this country.
One of my previous horses was very sensitive and I had to ride with proper sheepskin cover at all times. Nothing else worked. |

Posted - 19 Jan 2010 : 8:59:24 PM Aerborn Humane for Roger too - but he still pulls faces when I initially girth up even though I have always tightened it v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y!

Posted - 19 Jan 2010 : 7:49:51 PM Thanks everyone looks like the humane girth is the favourite. She's fine once it's on it's just doing it up she hates and has got worse recently even though i'm always really careful and only put it on one hole each side and walk her round and do it up one at a time. Mohair sounds interesting too |

Posted - 19 Jan 2010 : 7:09:52 PM Hello, I have just had Tallie away for some basic training and I bought a Moehair girth from the girl who was doing the stuff for me. It is dressage girth size as I ride her in a Strada saddle. I really like the idea of it as it moves with her instead of rubbing although I hav'nt done a lot of mileage in it yet. Basically its like a western string girth except a lot softer. Tals is very sensitive when girthing and rubs quite easily. Paula x |

Posted - 19 Jan 2010 : 6:18:28 PM Yep......same here, another vote for Aerborne Humane Girths They are brilliant, especially for a young horse when starting under saddle...also not expensive. Try one and see....soft and padded, never chafe Big thumbs up from me after several years trying alternatives

Posted - 19 Jan 2010 : 1:36:44 PM My mare can be quite girthy and I found that the neoprene ones or Stubben string girth seem to get the least reaction. I have tried a sheepskin sleeve but it slips too much with one on. Is it the girthing up reaction or is the girth rubbing? My mare is fine once the girth is fastened and we don't get any rubs. |
