My pure bred mare has a very thin mane and tail and I'm trying to get them looking better and thickened up a bit. I've been using Canter Mane & Tail conditioner which seems to be working on her mane but her tail is still so thin and weedy that people keep asking me if I've cut it!! It is getting to the stage that it is upsetting me.

I cannot see any sign of mites and she doesn't rub it so I am at a loss as to why it is so weedy. I only brush it with a body brush so I don't pull any out.

Has anyone got any ideas or tips on how I can get it looking better?

Thank You for reading :)

Hi, We use tail bags most of the time, mostly in winter, and both my mares tails are close to the floor. I believe that it has helped with the growth and the are certainly cleaner. I Do brush the tails but only once a month, i cover them in mane and tail leave it for a few moments them brush with a paddle brush [the one humans use]. Get a TAIL BAG

I agree with Simbba try to avoid rugs with neck covers, if on constantly I think they get itchy and causes them to scratch on things, hence no mane, I try to only use mine when its really cold, I know easier said than done with the rotten weather we have had, I spray with mane and tail or cowboy magic most days and hardly ever brush mane or tail.

'how do you all cope with the smell of mtg?????' -copied from katherinepees post

The first time I used it (last weekend) wasn't keen on the smell, but yesterday I didn't notice it quite so much & Michelle LOVES the smell of it - strange daughter I have!!!
An hours soak in the bath afterwards gets rid of the smell!

The same as babs,i never brush manes and tails only when going to shows with detangler then soft brush.I AVOID neck covers even with detangler spray put on they have lost part of their manes and showing pallys its gutting when this happens,so would rather have a dirty full mane and they all live out 24/7 and have long manes and tails.

I've just ordered some mtg from Madelaine at the Arabian Emporium.
Unfortunately shes snown in at the mo.
Without it, we are getting about an inch a month regrowth, so will be interesting to see if we get extra regrowth once we start on the mtg?

Thanks Holly, I have been turning Mini out with a neck cover at the moment as it has been so cold so I will spray the inside of that with conditioner. Good idea

Flowers of sulphur is good for mud fever, it also encourages hair growth on the sore patches so I dont see why is shouldnt encourage hair growth elsewhere. You can get it on e bay.

I have just brought a booklet from a website called fairytale manes and tails and the secret ingredient is flower of sulphur. The main ingredient in MTG is sulphur but if you make your own mixture using pure sulphur powder and pretroleum jelly etc it should be stronger. apparantly if you rub it into the roots once a week you should expect to see 3-4'' of growth per month!! im going to start this weekend with 3 of my horses so will see what happens. Ive also been told to brush mane and tail as little as often and when you do brush it to use a soft bristle human hair brush or your fingers. Also always keep the hair coated in mane and tail conditioner..the lady says to use showsheen. and if you use a neck cover then spray the insides of that with conditioner to stop friction. must admit my horses manes survive much better over the winter when i havent rugged them.

Good luck. take some before and after pics. i will do to.

Since it's both her mane and tail that are thin, that could be just how she naturally is. My old mare was like this - her mane was about 1 hair thick and seldom more than 6 inches long and her tail fairly thin too. I tried various things but nothing made much difference - it was just in her genes not to grow much m/t!

Thanks for the replies. I've had a look at the Arabian Emporium, I didn't know about it before, there's some great stuff on there!! I might give the MTG a go.

hi meg , one thing i find good especially this time of yr is too keep the tail plaited all the time |( i am not talking show ring plaits) but braid the tail into one thick plait.

it keeps it cleaner, they dont stand on it in the stable and when he is out he has a tail bag on.
they are great for keeping mud off tails ( especially with a grey!) and stops the hair snagging and being pulled out.
they fasten with velcro so they do come off if the horse decides to attach itself to a bush -!
i would echo what kim says i never brush ramaks mane - ever! if it gets muddy i will and wash /dry it, i never brush the mane -

i have used variuos products and found lyn russells mane and tail conditioner really good , also dove (the human kind) conditioner -
wash mane and tail as normal apply dove but dont rinse its great for strengthening the hair -
i might give the MTG a try as well - i have heard good things about it!

We never brush manes and tails...when showing would shampoo, spray with detangler and leave to dry before combing with fingers, then soft brush

Interested in reading what replies you get - chelles Arab was attacked last summer & ALL his mane & tail were hacked off. We're getting about an inch a month regrowth. Mane looking better but tail still looks rubbish. Just had a look at Madeleine's website. We're also feeding a seaweed supplement.

Hi Meg.

Try MTG from Madeleine at the Arabian Emporium.
Its good for hair growth etc.... also.... dont brush her tail.. leave it be. I only brush my mares mane/tail if she is being shown :D
