Ishara had a couple of weeks off whilst I was sorting saddle which coincided with coming in earlier as the nights were drawing in. Both her hinds were a little puffy but I just put that down to standing in and not doing work. I rode her on Saturday just round roads as it was first time in different saddle and she was fine. Monday I took her in the school before work and she was very feisty but sound, then Monday night I thought her left hind looked slightly puffy. Walked her round a couple of times and trotted her up seemed to have gone down. No heat in it and sound, found one little scab. Rode her round the roads yesterday morning and she was sound, did quite a lot of trotting and cantering on the spot! She's barefoot so not too much impact. This morning it looked a bit puffy again and just feels different to touch but again there's no obvious heat in it and she's sound. I turned her out and when I went back out after I'd mucked out it looked fine but the texture just feels different. Am I being paranoid, if it was both legs i'd assume it was the standing in but one leg seems strange. I feel a bit silly ringing the vet to say my horse is sound but the texture of her leg feels odd! Any ideas?

I think it could well be an infection or slight mud fever. I've hibiscrubbed tonight so i'll see if it swells again overnight. It goes down really quickly as soon as I walk her round and she's definately sound. This cold weather is making her very lively so i'd hate to have to give her anymore time off, she needs to work!

Pickle says hi to Aunty Alethea and says she's still being a very good girl (albeit feisty [:D)

It sounds like she could have a very mild infection in that leg. The fact you found a scab makes me think that. So much bacteria can creep in from the mud from the smallest cut. If she is sound i wouldn't worry too much about it, just try and keep it as clean as poss. If it goes down after exercise i wouldnt think its anything serious.
Love to the pickle

Don't know but could it be a touch of mud fever - low level? Sometimes causes a bit of puffiness which goes down with exercise. The scab made me think that.

Thanks guys, just spoken to the vet and he has said to cold hose and work her gently over the weekend as it goes down when she moves. Then if it's not better on Monday he'll come out but he did say he's seen a few horses with unexplained thickness in one leg over the last couple of weeks which is interesting.

I would get your vet to have a look if it feels different from the other leg; if there is a problem the earlier it is treated the better (and cheaper) and if there isn't it will set your mind at rest.

I'd err on the side of caution with this one Jo, and have a vet look at it. It's unusual for just one leg to swell and there can be significant damage without lameness. If there IS something damaged in there, and you don't detect it now ie. before it causes lameness, you'll make it worse by riding her.
Really hope it's nothing serious, but better safe than sorry.

Sounds a bit odd with just one hind leg swelling up.
I find with Rosie that when she is stabled both her hind legs can swell up but this is cured by bandaging her legs up on a night. Also, if she is fed barley that can cause her hind legs to swell. But with her its always both legs, not just the one?
Hope you get sorted.
